TV - Episode Titles disappearing when new episodes are added

Plex Media Server version: 1.13.2.5154-fd05be322
OS: CentOS Linux 7.5.1804

I have a TV library. I’m creating a show manually (it’s not in thetvdb). Everything is going fine. I add an episode, manually add title, sort title, originally available and summary, and Save. Everything looks okay.

But then I add a new episode file. Plex does its scan, finds the file adds it, but, for reasons I can’t fathom, it removes the title of the previous episodes (all of them, including in other seasons). The sort title, originally available, and summary are all in tact, but for some reason, it removes the title.

Any advice?

Before editing anything in this ‘unmatchable’ series, you must tell Plex that it is actually unmatchable. Otherwise Plex will try on each library update to match it, which then leads to the loss of your manual edits.

Go to the top level of your custom series/tv show
use Match
‘Search Options’
set ‘Agent’ to ‘Personal Media Shows’
Search
click on the first and only search result
Only after that, start adding your episode titles.

Tip: if these episodes are in the .mp4 container, you can embed the episode titles into the ‘Title’ meta tag. Plex can fetch them on its own.
This saves you repeated editing in case something goes wrong and you’ll have to rebuild your library.

Thanks for the quick response, Otto! And for the good advice! That did it.

Incidentally, they are MP4s and I had originally thought that tags might solve the problem. They didn’t. But after:

  1. removing the files
  2. Emptying the trash
  3. Cleaning the bundles
  4. Putting a single file back
  5. Changing the Match Agent (as you suggested)
  6. adding additional files

The problem is now gone. And it would seem that adding that tags (at this point) would save at least one step.

Thank you so much!
