Tv recording skipping horribly!

So I just started using an M1 Mac to make PLEX DVR TV recordings and about half of them skipped like crazy!! Whole parts of shows are missing!?!

So I suspected it being the M1 Mac being too new and switched back to a Windows PC to record and it’s still happening!!

What the hell gives? DVRs are nothing new… why so much trouble implementing them?!? Don’t get me started on recording SNL on Saturday nights!

Back to Hulu for another month :frowning:

…Bump

Do you have destructive commercial skipping enabled? I’ve not had problems with excessively aggressive commercial removal, but it is a possiblity. Also, is this behavior for all channels? If not all, is your tuner OTA, and if so what is the signal strength? Posting debug level logs extracted from shortly after a problem recording would also be very helpful.

This can also happen if the antenna signal is too weak.
Make sure there is plenty of signal strength (and signal “quality” too).

We mostly record ABC, and it is the strongest channel in our area. I have used PLEX for years and have never seen this issue until just very recently. I also tried recording on my new M1 Mac with Plex server installed and had the same problem, went back to my PC that never had the problem before and it’s still happening. The show we watched today only skipped one small part but the rest was fine.

I don’t have commercial skip enabled. I have an HDHOMERUN Extend which is OTA. We mostly just record ABC, and looking at the device, it states that Signal Strength is 90% and Signal and Symbol Strength are both at 100%.

How do I provide the debug level logs from PLEX? And it would have to be right after a problem recording? Because we usually don’t watch the recordings for a few days and then realize they are unwatchable. Thanks!

Here is a good article on setting your logs to debug level and how to extract logs. Just make sure to not turn on verbose logging - it is too much information and causes the logs to roll off after just a few minutes.

Are you able to grab a problematic recording file off of your file system and play it with another video player? (VLC, Windows Media Player, etc) It would help to verify if the skipping is in the recorded video file, or if the recorded video is ok and the skipping is happening with playback. If the skipping is the the recorded video file (I’m guessing) then you would grab the logs from just after the recording has finished.

All of your signal strengths look good. I’ve also got an Extend I use with Plex, but haven’t seen the problem you have. Do you also see this skipping if you watch Live TV through Plex? In Plex Web what transcoder quality do you have set for your Extend? (You find this in Plex Web → Settings → Live TV & DVR → (Under you HDHomeRun Extend) click Device Settings.
