So I noticed that after the PlexWeb 3.1 and PMS 1.4.3 updates some of my TV shows are now showing trailers for the series. There’s no rhyme or reason as to which shows get trailers, it appears fairly random to me.
My question is: Is there any way to define the trailers? Perhaps a YouTube URL, or failing that, a manually-added file? Maybe the same way the movie trailers work. For example:
/TV Shows/Gravity Falls/Gravity Falls-trailer.mp4
It’d be nice if that would work, but after testing that out, I can testify that it does not work. Can this be done? Or can someone explain how, exactly, series trailers are chosen, and where they come from?
I add trailers something like this:
“My TV Show - S01E00 - Season 1Trailer.mp4”,
“My TV Show - S02E00 - Season 2 Trailer.mp4”, etc and then drop the file into the appropriate season folder for the show. Not ideal, I have to manually edit Title Info and air date so the trailer always shows as the first episode bit it sort of works as a trailer for the season.
Hopefully, a real method is revealed in the near future so the trailers are available in the same manner they are with movies.

I haven’t tried that yet, as that would add an “episode” at the beginning of a season. I’m looking more for something that Plex would categorize as a “trailer”, so I or my users can click the “Play Trailer” button on the series information page. As I said, I have some shows that do this already (12 Monkeys, Adventure Time, Ash vs. Evil Dead, Avatar, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, to name a few). The trailers and other extras show up just under the cast list for the series:
I have no idea where Plex is grabbing this trailer from, or how/if I can define my own, just as I am able to for movies. I think it’s a no-brainer; I’m sure some of my users would love to see a trailer for a show they’ve never heard of.
Plex doesn’t work like that.
As a Plex Passer you have enabled automatic trailers and Plex has downloaded a ‘Trailer’ (from Gawd knows where) for Ash vs Evil Dead and put it in with your database (or Gawd knows where) for Ash vs Evil Dead (or something like that). You can’t do that manually - at least not easily. That ain’t in the Handbook. You’d have to ‘hack’ that in somehow.
You and everyone else can do as @leelynds suggests and use a Season 00 folder. That’s currently the ONLY way to add an ‘Extra’ to a TV Show without building a monster out of spare parts and directing a lightning bolt into it to jump start it - that’s sure to rile the villagers.

In point of fact, Plex actually sort of works like that - at least for movies. As I stated in the first post, I can put individual movies in their own folders, and then manually include trailers or other extras, as long as I use the correct naming scheme; Plex, using my “Local Media Assets” agent, will recognize those files and add them to the movie’s entry. Take a look at the screenshot below - I wanted to have a separate entry for Mad Max: Fury Road (Black & Chrome) in my database, and I wanted to use a specific trailer for that entry. Plex had no problem with it.
Since all my TV shows are housed in folders for each series, I thought it would be simple enough to do the same thing - manually add an .mp4 trailer and then have Plex display it as an “extra”.
That being said, I wish I could learn more about where Plex is automatically grabbing trailers from, as a separate point, because that might be useful.
Yep, that works for Movies - Not for TV Shows.
Trust us - we hear this very complaint often and have heard it for years. The problem is Plex doesn’t hear it - or care.
Just sayin’…
I believe all trailers and extras for TV and Movies come from Internet Video Archives( http://www.internetvideoarchive.com )
I don;t think it’s possible to grab anything for personal use from their website. We can hope that Plex opens up a real method to add TV extras similar to the way movies work. The “online” extras only appear on the TV series main page (including the new cast information) so a specific season or episode “extra” doesn’t necessarily fall in line anyway. We should consider it a “work in progress” for a while
fun fact, ash vs evil has still no trailer for me O_o
