TV Tuner for NAS

Hi
Can anyone tell my if I can install a Hauppauge Win Quad HD TV Turner in a Nasbox.
So I can run plex tv and dvr directly onto the Nas drives.

Hauppauge is a perfered tuner for plextv and dvr but is not currectly on the list. It was; but apparently there is two different chips, so they are testing the new one.

I have a Qnap TVS-671 nas which has ywo PCIe slots; 1 Gen3 x 8 and 1 Gen2 x 4. Not sure which is which.

Any thoughts

NAS devices are not supported for that particular tuner.

G’day Pbenzschawel

Is there a perfered PCIe turner card for Nasboxes ? And does it work ?

I know you can get a USB turner, but I would have thought a PCIe turner would have a better transfer rate.
I would like to cord cut and have the Nas run a couple of TV’s and perhaps a tablet (all via wi-fi) without the need for multiple aerial connections.

Why do we need a PVR when the Nas has the storage capability?
And I suppose it will also depend on what software you can get to match up with the tuner?
Sorry if this is repetition and has been discussed before, maybe someone has done this already.

Ultiminatly I would have a PCIe tuner and a PCIe network card; both installed on the Nas
Is this possible or am I just barking up the wrong tree.

According to the above list, the only tuners that are supported are HD-homerun devices on NAS devices. That likely would be your best option. Are you familiar with those devices? https://www.silicondust.com/hdhomerun/

I used to use a HD-Homerun extend for my ATSC tuner, but now have switched to a WinTV Quad HD. This is on a Headless Linux Server (Ubuntu 16.04.3) Both devices have worked great!

The nice thing about the HD-Homerun devices is they can be plugged anywhere in your house as long as it has a connection to the antenna/cable source and your network. The tuners are then shared over the network to the applicable device. They also came out with the HD homerun Quatro a few months ago which also has four tuners.

So to summarize, you can run your PMS on your NAS and store all of the recordings on that. A HD Homerun tuner will be external but can be utilized by your NAS.

Hey pbenzschawel

Top answer, Thanks

I am familiar with the HD-homerun devices, I think they may vary a bit for the Australia versions.
I like the idea of WinTV Quad turner and these have quite good reviews. I’ll need to check out the Quatro.
The PCIe card is about $130 AU, so maybe still worth a try…

I think your Headless Linux server is doing the same as my NAS, so this is a positive sign.
So the HD-homerun just does all the tv guide and recording stuff and because it’s on the network it will record to the NAS
Great

Thanks again for your help

Glad you got it figured out, just beware, your NAS device may be lacking the proper kernel/drivers to support the PCI-E tuner. I’m not too familiar with NAS devices, I know they can run derivatives of Linux, but you still need the proper kernel etc…

If you want to stick with the NAS, your easiest and safest bet with be a HDHomerun device…

Good point !!

I have had a look at the Homerun devices, which looks very simple to install. The only draw back I have now …is my TV is not IOS, it is WebOS. So i’ll do some research into PMsoftware for Linux/ Ubuntu and see what’s available.
