Device: Apple TV 4K Gen 2 on tvOS 16 beta 2
Hello,
I use a SONOS setup with a Beam, Sub and 2 Play:1s as rear.
In general, 5.1 works great with the Apple TV app (tested with Apple TV+ content).
In Plex, I have some movies with TrueHD 7.1
Direct Stream is enabled.
When I play movies on my Apple TV in the Plex app (latest TestFlight beta), the rear speakers are not working.
I tried to change the audio settings on the Apple TV (Atmos off, forced Dolby Digital 5.1) but nothing changes.
Hello,
thanks for your answer!
The Sonos App shows “Dolby Digital 5.1”, Everything rebooted before.
The Beam is connected via ethernet cable and all other speakers and the sub wirelessly.
As soon as I start playing a movie / tv show via AppleTV+ the surrounds start to work again.
So for me it seems like a Plex bug.
Hi, we recently tested 5.1 Surround on tvOS 16 beta 4 with the current Plex app (and a Sonos setup, coincidentally) and couldn’t reproduce any surround sound issues. Are you still seeing the issue on newer tvOS betas?
Hi @Stevenson-Price Though not the person who raised this issue but I see the same thing with a lack of anything from surround speakers.
(Samsung Soundbar and Wirless surrounds)
I just updated to the very latest tvOS beta (and latest TestFlight) and it’s still the same.
However on the latest and previous tvOS betas it’s definitely only an issue with the new player. Switching to the old player and the surrounds kick in every time.
Interestingly then switching back to the new player also gives output from the surrounds on that same movie.
Starting another movie, once again gives no rear speakers until I either just use the old player or start playback on the old player and then once again switch back to the new player.
I’m seeing a similar behaviour as well. Centre and rear channel sound drops out completely when using the enhanced player on tvOS 16 with Plex. Switching to the old player resolves it in most cases.
omg. I have spent the better part of 3 hours troubleshooting this exact issue and coke to the same conclusion. I thought it was something to do with whether the file was AC3, E-AC3, TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD, AAC, or 5.1, 7.1.
Nope. Just tvOS 16 and Plex app bug.
Glad it’s been acknowledged and being worked on.
I’m running the Plex TestFlight Beta and will eagerly await an update that will bring back my surround sound. In the mean time, I suppose I’m using Infuse!
Hi, is there any update on fixing this? Issue persists in the tvOS 16 Release Candidate, it would be awesome if it were fixed before tvOS 16 is available to the masses. Thanks
Hey yep we’re working on this one and testing our fix internally. I actually have a test build deployed to TestFlight we’d like to confirm works with a variety of setups before releasing widely. Anyone up for testing the build? (It’s easy to revert to regular App Store / betas after testing) If so please DM me the email address you use for TestFlight, thanks!
