I have family members trying to cast from their smart phones to the TV, but this movie has multiple versions - 4K and 1080p.
Currently when trying to cast, once I connect to the TV with the app and select the version, the app doesn’t even cast, it just plays the 4K version on my phone. We need the ability to choose which version is cast.
They’re complaining about buffering at the intro for this movie, so I am assuming it’s defaulting to trying to cast the 4K version over Wi-Fi.
In the meantime I’ve asked them to see if there’s an app for their tv to avoid casting altogether.
thanks for report. do you know what models/brands of tv they have? Since you mentioned they were checking if app on tv are theses models with Chromecast built in? These are the old mobile apps or new ones?
Sorry for the delay in response, unfortunately I’m not sure - I’d have to ask them and see if they can figure out how to relay the info (not tech saavy). Tautulli also doesn’t list any info other than Chromecast.
They also weren’t signed into the TV app itself - which I advised they should do. I’ll see what info I can get out of her.
Update
My cousin has an iPhone and my aunt has an Android phone - my cousins app Plex for iOS from a screenshot she sent is on 18.6.2.
My own phone which I tested casting with as well is Android and I’m using the latest 2025.24.0 (966828479) and I was casting to an Nvidia Shield Pro (2019). The casting didn’t work for me period - it just played the 4K version on my phone. I didn’t try more than once.
They are casting to an LG 65UH 7650 which has a Chromecast dongle plugged into the HDMI port.
I’m trying to get info about the version of the Chromecast, but may take a bit.
Based on her description and a fuzzy photo it looks like the 3rd Generation (2018) Chromecast model.
