We are attempting to run Plex Server on our secure intranet. previously we have had no issues but these newer versions have given us more headaches than almost what its worth. We would pay for an unlimited Plex pass once we can confirm it works in the environment.
The issues at hand.
We have tried installing Plex server on both an Ubuntu Server as well as a Windows 2008 R2 Server.
Both install without issues.
All Servers are behind a government controlled proxy solution with very little we can do about it.
All workstations can sign into plex.tv with usernames and passwords regardless as can clients.
On the servers we can also log into the plex.tv websites without incident.
However, From the managment screen we cannot log in or claim the media server.
We will never have external access to our Media Server, we only need the Plex Pass Subscriptions available to the server.
Clients will need a managed config pushed to them via group policy or MDM so we can advise them of the server IP address and all the first time use stuff removed.
So to that end, How or what needs to be done to get our servers to validate and reached claimed status. And what xml formatted file can i edit to push to clients with the relevant settings pre-configured ?
All “claiming” a server does is sign the server into an account. So, you can do the same thing by going to Settings > Server > General in the web app and signing into the desired Plex account. That can be done via the “local” web app if you want.
Date & timestamp is correct. I have also tried this on two platforms. for ease of access i’m currently running it on a windows 2008 R2 server but i get the exact same issue when running on a Linux Ubuntu install.
Nothing in the logs stands out. but it would probably make more sense to you than I.
We are running through a proxy but the same proxy is behind every web connection including the access to this website which I can log into correctly.

Must be your proxy / firewall ?? Getting timeouts on connections to plex.tv domain

Looks like sa2000 beat me to it. The logs definitely indicate timeouts when the server tries to contact plex.tv for various things. So, that would explain why you can’t sign in (“claim”) the Plex Media Server: the server isn’t able to communicate with our plex.tv services.
Yet whilst on the same server I can connect and sign in to the plex.tv website without issue.
So is the plex service trying to run additional tasks that might be blocked somehow

The plex media server process is getting timeouts on its attempt to communicate with plex.tv services. So something is blocking that access - proxy? firewall ?
Hello ausloki. Did you ever get this resolved? I ran into the same issue about 6 months ago and never figured it out. Didn’t matter if I used Server 2012 or 2016. I never could claim the server. Gave up and installed Windows 10 on the same hardware with the same ip address and everything worked. I find myself once again wanting to use a Server Operating System on newer hardware (so I can team the NICs) and same issue… installs fine but unable to claim the server.
I’m almost thinking it’s a permissions problem somewhere because I did get a message about “save unsuccessful” or something like that…
Anyway, if you figured this out, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!
I just had this issue myself. My PC is connected into the modem router from the ISP, but I also have a wifi router that’s also connected to it. The issue seemed to be that the IP was not an “internal” ip and I had to use my wifi router to connect and obtain an IP of 192.168.x.x and then claim the server and then I could disconnect from there and use the wired connection.
