I am running Plex Server v 1.16.3.1402 on a Windows 10 machine and have been unsuccessful in completing the Live TV / DVR set up process and am after any suggestions as to what I might try.
Here is the process I am going through:
I go to Settings - Manage - Live TV & DVR
After a wait for ‘Loading DVRs’ I am then presented with the Unable to load DVRs page and the ‘Set up Plex DVR’ button.
Choosing this I am presented with the screen that states “We have found hardware we recognise!”
I have the Hauppauge WinTV-quadHD installed, so it show me that 2 devices have been found - I choose just one of them.
I am then presented with the screen that allows me to scan for channels - I am UK based and choose ‘Antenna’, ‘United Kingdom’, and ‘DVB-T/T2 UK (Winter Hill, Granada)’ and scan for channels.
Scanning for channels is successful and once complete, clicking on Continue takes me to the screen where I choose ‘Language’ and ‘Postcode’ and then the ‘best guide’ list is displayed.
After deselecting most of the TV channels leaving just the few I am interested in watching, and aligning the Guide to the correct Channel I choose the ‘Continue’ button.
And that is as far as I get!!! The ‘Continue’ button changes to an ‘orange spinny’ button and just sits on screen forever (or at least for up-to an hour because that is as long as I have left it to spin).
Has anyone seen this and does anyone have any idea how I can get past this final step.
Even worse. I had the Live TV/DVR working and then one day it stopped and says I need to setup DVR. And then when I try to set it up I get your same problem with adding a tuner. I have reached out on Twitter and this forum and have not received a response from PLEX. On Twitter they acknowledged the issue, but then went radio silent when I asked about an ETA on a fix. I have started looking into other options for Live TV/DVR and that stinks because I moved to PLEX for that specific functionality.
Unfortunately I’ve not found any workaround - yet!
Have even tried choosing different Guides, but they all do the same and its just hangs/stalls and gets no further.
What is really annoying is that when the Live TV / DVR functionality was introduced I went out and purchased the tuner card; installed, ran through set-up and it worked a treat. Used to use it to watch tv whilst working away. Not used it for ages but decided to check it as I need the functionality again now - And no joy.
Also went to Lifetime Pass when the functionality was introduced - Now unsure what to do to move forward.
I’ve seen may other forum postings that are UK based and are using Freeview and HDHomeRun; so it must be possible to get past this stage.
I’m in total agreement with you there; what success have you had in finding any other solutions/options. Plex was supposed to be my one-stop shop for my media and recording TV I wanted to watch.
The “best” solution I have found so far is TabloTV I think. The problem with that is they use Tablo tuners so my entire SiliconDust investment would be a waste of money. Silicon Dust offers DVR functionality with their stuff, but you can’t access it remotely and the interface is borderline terrible. I have converted everything in my house to Roku and, as of right now, you can’t access their recorded content through their app. I too bought the lifetime pass for the Live TV/DVR functionality. I was told on one of my other forum post to downgrade my Plex server install to an older version, but I can’t find a way to get an older version.
Hi, after more searching I found this - it worked for me!
Plex is updating their Guide data source. It appears that 1.16.0.1226 only handles the old Guide and 1.16.1.1291 only works with a newly created instance of the tuner with the new guide. Ideally you would know this and delete the tuner from the Server Setting Live TV +_ DVR, then upgrade to 1291, and then redefine your tuner on 1291. There appears to be a short window after reboot when 1291 shows the old tuner in Settings and you can delete it, then recreate it. If you wait a few minutes, then 1291 can’t find a tuner and it can’t create a new new tuner and it spins. In Windows, reboot, watch for Plex Server to appear in the taskbar, click it, go to setting, and delete the tuner as fast as you can type/mouse. For slower people, Uninstall Plex Media Server, which leaves all the files still on disk, then in File Explorer go to your C:\Users(your username) directory, show hidden folders so you see AppData, navigate to AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Updates. find the 1.16.0.1226-xxxx folder, run the 1.16.0.1226-xxxx.exe in the packages subdirectory. Now you are back on the previous release (and Live TV works), and you can do what we should have done in the first place and delete the Live TV Tuner from Settings, then upgrade to 1291, and then redefine your tuner and get the new Guild data.
In the Live TV Guild grid, you have old data if at the end it says “Powered by Gracenote” and you have new data if it says “Powered by Plex”.
Many thanks. I give that a try - would have thought that the upgrade would have removed any incompatible files as part of its process though If this is the reason then its an oversight when creating the upgrade.
Many Many Many Thanks - This seems to have worked!
Unistalled Plex, Installed Plex version 1.16.0.1226
Started Plex - Removed the DVR
Upgraded Plex to latest version
Went through the DVR set up and the guide is now currently updating!
EmOff - Try the solution supplied by ChromeSurfer. An easy way to get to your previous versions is to open up Windows Explorer and type %appdata% in the address bar; this will take you to the adddata/roaming folder, go up one folder and there you will see the Local folder and the previous installed Plex versions are stored there.
