"Unable to connect to..." from Android to Windows

Server Version#: 1.18.8.2527
Player Version#: Android 7.30.0.16218

Hi everyone,

first some info on my Plex setup:
Plex server with all media on a Windows 10 desktop computer, latest version 1.18.8.2527
Another Windows 10 laptop running the Plex Windows app, version 1.6.2.994-e05b79d6
Another Android device (Android version 10) for “casting” the content to the laptop, beta app version 7.30.0.16218

When first selecting the correct device in the casting menu, casting media from desktop server to laptop works, and vice versa. Also casting server media from laptop to Android device works (media playing on Android device).
However, when trying to select the laptop or desktop from the Android app for casting media to laptop or desktop it immediately says “unable to connect” for both. But I do see my whole library in the Android app, and can even play content on my mobile device. But only on the Android device itself, not casted to laptop or desktop. So I know the server connection from Android device to desktop is actually fine but casting does not work.

I already put all the connections on insecure and allow all connections. I already put the Windows network on private. I don’t know what else to do…

Hopefully, I am not the only one experiencing this but I haven’t found a solid solution.
My idea is to have the laptop connected to a TV (HDMI). Choose the media on my phone, cast it to the laptop and it will be played on the TV and I can use the Android device as a remote.

Now only the last step (Android - laptop connection) is not working. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
J C

Anyone…?

I’m also experiencing this issue since the latest public server build, tried repairing the server, setting a static port forwarding rule, I can also stream to the Android just am unable to connect from the Android to the PC player.

Also experiencing the same problem between Android and both Plex Media Player and Plex windows

I’m experiencing this issue too but I had it working perfectly until recently. I’ll roll the server back as a first step as its the only change I’ve made - though the android apps could have updated?

The Android app indeed was just recently updated to 7.30. I suspect that change is the culprit, since the companion function still works with non-Android devices (ie. remote controlled PMP with Plex Web).

I tried controlling Plex for Windows player with Plex web on another windows device. It connects but wont actually cast. The error message says there isn’t a valid connection for casting from the server and suggests checking to see if the server is claimed. The server is claimed and my network configuration is correct and hasn’t changed since this problem arose. Any suggestions?

Ah, not just me then!

I believe it’s the app that’s the issue as I can control Plex Media Player fine if it open up Plex web in a browser. Likewise, I can control Plex Media Player using Plex for Windows.

However I can’t use the Android app to connect to any Plex client; be it Plex Media Player, Plex for Windows or Plex for Xbox One. The Android app just reports “Unable to connect”.

I’ve tried the obvious stuff like re-logging into the Android app, checked my wifi network, cleared the app’s cache.

Right - tried that. I can cast from Plex for Windows 10 between my PC and laptop so obviously nothing wrong with my configuration. So that’s it. Its the android app - the latest update has borked casting for at least some of us. I’m surprised that there doesn’t seem to have been widespread comment?

Okay so it’s obvious this is a general bug now. Hopefully the Plex team can notice and fix this soon…

Exact same boat as you guys.

Casting from android to any plex device says unable to connect to xxxx but casting from plex web to any device is fine.

Reporting the same issue exactly as described.

Latest versions on Server/Player/Android.

I can cast from web to desktop but not from Android to Desktop. Thought was going mad after a fresh install. Hope this gets looked at or addressed soon.

Ah, same here. I uninstalled and reinstalled everything to double-check if my setup was the issue. I guess everyone else is having the same issue where I cannot cast from my android device to TV or PC.
But if I use the browser, I can cast & control the Windows 10 player app. (Hope that wasn’t confusing)

Same problem here, started within the last two weeks. My v7.30 app doesn’t work. Another phone with v7.29 still works.

Okay guy, last update for the Android beta app (the beta from yesterday or today) fixes the problem. The Plex team has heard us! Well done!!!

I have the latest app update and server update and also restarted my client and it updated. It is still giving me the unable to connect error.

You need to enter the beta program and get the latest Android beta app. I have updated the solution post.

which version u are on right now. i have tried 7.30.1.16477 beta from apkmirror and its still the same, i cant even companion and cast setting on my android phone.

I am on version 7.31.0.16549
