Server Version#: 0.9.16.4
Player Version#: 6.3 build 9
I have a QNAP TS-419P+ running firmware 4.3.3 build 20190322. This is an older model QNAP that still has an ARM CPU which is fine as this is at our vacation home and we use it only on occasion. Our Roku is a Roku 3 and both the Roku and QNAP running Plex are hard-wired into the same router. Connectivity is working and there are no network issues.
My question is when I go to the Plex web administration page I see all of my movies and TV shows but when I attempt to connect via the Roku 3 I’m told the server is currently unavailable. I’ve verified PMS is running on the QNAP as otherwise I couldn’t log in and see TV shows.
My concern is that I realize this is an old build of PMS (as this is an ARM CPU it is running on) and I wanted to ask whether or not a change was made that the latest version of the Plex app on Roku will not talk to an old build of PMS. Is this the case? If so is there any way to get an older build of Plex on my Roku 3? As we are only at this vacation property for part of the year I’d rather not replace the NAS with a newer x86-x64 model if I can avoid it.
Your concern is correct, when Roku updated their OS to 9 it killed off any “retro” clients that would work with the version Plex Media Server you have.
Other than upgrading the nas you could get a nuc or a Nvidia Shield and run PMS there leaving your media on the QNAP.
Use RARFlix using the link below. The person above me is incorrect as the retro channel works perfectly fine with OS 9 and even 9.1 that isn’t even fully pushed out yet. The decision to kill the channel now and code a remote kill switch into Retro was a decision made by Plex, not Roku.
Thank you so much for this–I was able to get RARFlix working. Yes, it’s an older interface but for a home we only spend part of the year at this is perfect and allows me to continue to use the QNAP. Much appreciated that you took the time to point this out to me!
Mr_Angry - To be clear - RarFlix may stop working in the ‘near’ future.
(non technical description) It’s programmed in a language that Roku is upgrading. Once many Roku channels have fully upgraded, Roku may update and no longer allow old channels like Rarflix to work. This was a contributing factor (but not only) that Plex updated it’s channel for Roku.
Unless someone makes a new up to date RarFlix (the original author no longer updates), it will not work once Roku upgrades.
Understood. At this point I’m happy if this works through the summer we are at our vacation home. I’m fully prepared to upgrade our home QNAP to a newer model and bring that NAS to our vacation home. At that point we’d have an x64 based NAS which is still supported by Plex and therefore can run the latest version of PMS.
