I’ve noticed that when I try to play a HD movie or TV show on the Plex app on my Apple TV, it gives me a very low resolution copy that it says is being automatically converted to 720p. When I try to change it to play at original quality, it won’t let me and the technical details say that my bandwidth is limited to 2000 kbps. I have a 2000 Mbps fiber internet service. I’ve seen in other troubleshooting topics that this can be due to Remote Access not being properly configured, so I tried to make sure I had a static IP address and port forwarding so that I got the green checkmark for Remote Access on my server, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. What might I be doing wrong?
If your stream applies the remote access restrictions this implies there’s something fishy about your connectivity (unless you’re actually streaming media from a remote server – obviously).
If your Apple TV and your Plex Media Server are on the same network it might be worth double-checking they’re actually in the same subnet. Some access points or network components inside your home network will create their own sub-network with its own IP ranges etc.
Plex client and servers won’t see each other as local while in different subnets. As a Plex Pass member you have an option to tell your server to treat some other subnets to be part of your local network. That being said… unless you knowingly and purposefully configured your network to consist of different subnets it might be easier to simply fix the misbehaving network component and configure it in bridge mode / disable its DHCP server (pointing it to the router instead).
If you’re actually streaming from a remote server… check the Remote/Internet Video Streaming quality in the Plex settings on your Apple TV!
