Unable to Direct Stream file at 480p

MP4 files encoded with H264 at 852X480 at 661 Kbps will not Direct Stream without being Transcoded even though Roku is on local network, Direct Play set to Force, Allow Direct Stream checked, Local Quality set to 2Mbps 720p, and Remote Quality set to 1.5 Mbps 480p. Remote Roku with same settings also requires Transcoding even though Limit remote stream bitrate on server is set to 1,5 Mbps (480p). Encoding video at 720X404 will allow Direct Play.

what reason does it give for transcoding in playback info?

I had one file that was H264 480p and another that was also H264 480p. One would Direct Stream and the other would not. Comparing the files, the one that would Direct Stream was 8-bit and the one that would not was 10-bit. I assume this is a limitation on the Roku and that Plex does support 10-bit. I verified this by playing the 10-bit file on my PC and it does allow Direct Play. Now I just have to convert all of my 10-bit files.

Which Roku do you have? As far as currently sold Rokus I believe only the non-4k Express does not support 10bit.
