Unable to play media over Chromecast

Per another thread, they’re aware, but can’t replicate the issue. Can you post some logs so we have more info? Honestly, I wish they’d just roll back whatever changes they made, back to the new version that worked. For now, I’ll just keep using that beta, but they need to sort this. Chromecast is kind of a big thing for media these days.

I too am having casting problems from my android plex app to every chromecast in my house. It all started happening at the same time. I tried factory resetting my bedroom chromecast, reinstalling plex but no luck. I can get my plex app to connect to chromecast but as soon as I play a video, the plex on chromecast screen goes gray and stays like that, no picture. I can see on my plex app on my phone seems to be playing the video, the seconds are counting up, but nothing on the TV chromecast. Really frustrating, just another problem with plex over the years and casting, already looking for alternatives, I’ve had enough

I had this issue, too. I resolved it by updating my server version, which was quite old. The “media not found” issue persists, though.

I removed the latest version from my android phone and installed a previous version which just works as before. Just go to apkmirror.com and get it. THANKS to quadriflax for the tip.

This is crazy. I’ve been using and paying for plex for years and chromecast support has always been good for me. I’ve just had to roll back a few versions to 7.23.0 (7.24.3 didn’t work for me either).

Please fix this Plex!

Hello anyone on this thread you might want to try downloading plex server from their website and installing it.

No need to uninstall the current server software just pave straight over the top of it.

It worked for me :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

See this thread where it has also worked for others.

Plex seems to have given up on support android devices through Chromecast, they have went 100% in the dark. Not say anything or even trying to give support.

Sadly this company may have lost what it once had. Hopefully people start leaving plex for other software. Might be the only way they take the time to communicate and fix the issue.

Personally, I think its pathetic that they dont test their release. But that seems to be the general process of most software company’s now. Put everything behind trying to get people to pay for 3rd party stuff or microtransactions. Lazy developers and bottom line thinking is killing solid software and with luck they will kill their business.

It seems this is actually intentional - which is actual hot garbage if is actually the case. Can’t really say without comment from Plex or something.

See this support page: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201206866-cast-from-browser-or-desktop/

In order to initiate a cast to your Chromecast device using Plex while on a normal computer, you’ll need to use a browser—specifically the Chrome browser It is not currently possible to cast from the Plex Media Player or Windows Store apps. Chromecast also requires secure connections. The main requirements to do so:

  1. Make sure your Plex Media Server allows secure connections https://support.plex.tv/articles/206225077-how-to-use-secure-server-connections/ (is not set to Disabled )
  2. Use the Chrome browser
  3. Open our hosted web app (not the local/bundled web app that comes with your server)

Google does not support casting from other browsers besides Chrome.

This didn’t work. I installed version 7.19.2.11789. Same problem, connect plex to chrome cast, start a video, nothing but grey screen, despite seeing the video runtime line counting up. I give up on plex. It’s always had issues with chrome cast, now doesn’t play at all and they don’t seem to care about fixing it

Have you sent logs? I’d at least start there. I ended up doing a full uninstall/reinstall of newer version on my NAS to fix the gray screen issue. Wasn’t necessarily my intention to do it that way, but it worked for me. Try posting logs, maybe that will help.

Thanks for the input and assistance, but I switched to Emby. I’m done with Plex, it’s awful as is their (non existent) support and desire to fix their serious bugs

Could you please check on the following also: Unable to stream Chromecast media from synced content

Manually updating to the latest Plex Server seemed to fix it for me.

Same problem. This is so annoying. If they did this on purpose, ill not resub.

I don’t know that they’ve done it on purpose, but they seem unwilling/unable to fix it. Clearly something broke and I know with which version it did (rolling back to old version fixes everything), but they don’t appear to care to look into it. So as long as the old version keeps working for me, whatever. The new stuff they add is pretty pointless anyway. It is super disappointing, though.

Same issue here, got a new device, can’t play to the chromecast, “unable to play media”, App v 7.27.0.15018.
My old device with 7.3.1.6246 can cast the same video fine.

Not the first time Plex breaks stuff with their updates… bleh-.-

Looks like beta version 7.28.0.15196 has fixed casting (at least for me). The notes only mention it fixing the Facebook login stuff, so who knows what they did. I assume they probably don’t know either, since they don’t know why it broke in the first place.

Did the 7.28.0.15196 beta resolved the issue for others too? Unfortunately I don’t have access to this SW.

Did not fix, issue still happening.

Note 8 will not Chromecast anything - been an issue for ages. It’s the only way I use Plex, and as a lifetime pass subscriber, it’s really disappointing
