Unable to Play Media

This seems to be a common problem, but I’m at a loss for mine.

Setup:
Plex Server is hosted on WD EX2 Ultra
The WD EX2 Ultra is connected to my home network
I am able to play any music or videos from the Plex server on any device connected to my home network, whether connected by wire or wireless (WiFi).

I set my router that’s connected to the internet to allow UPnP
I went to the Plex server settings > Remote access and enabled remote access
It came back as “Fully accessible outside your network” with the private to public IP addresses and port numbers showing.

I turned off WiFi on my cell phone and was able to connect to my Plex server successfully
It lists all my music and videos
I was able to play any of my music, no problems.
Playing videos is another story… :stuck_out_tongue:
Some videos play, some don’t (still from my cell phone, still disconnected from WiFi).
It’s not random.
The videos that do play, always play. And the videos that don’t play, still won’t play.
I reconnect the cell phone to my WiFi and ALL videos play.

Trouble-shooting:
I went to compare to videos, one that played (video1.mp4) and one the didn’t play (video2.mp4)
Both were in the same folder location
I went to the permissions of the two videos.

  • Checked the permissions from in windows and security settings and ownership were the same on both files
  • Using SSH, checked the linux/unix permissions and ownership and they were the same
    So I ruled out this type of permissions issue.

I don’t think it’s an encoding issue, otherwise it wouldn’t play at all (I could be wrong)
So I checked the encoding
-Both had the same resolution (720x480)
-Both had the same video encoding: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)(avc1)
-Both had the same audio encoding: MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)

I then removed the video that wouldn’t play, refreshed the plex server meta-data to make sure it was removed, re-added the video and refreshed again and it came back.
Tried to play the video and no change.

I uninstalled the plex app from my cell phone, re-installed the plex app and tried again. No change.

I ran a database integrity check:
Plex SQLite com.plexapp.plugins.library.db “PRAGMA integrity_check”
It came back as ‘ok’
Ran integrity check on com.plexapp.plugins.library.blobs.db as well and it came back as ‘ok’

I’m running out of ideas… Help please?

Although I don’t know what the difference is, I was able to resolve the issue.

  • I went to the settings of the PlexApp on my cell phone
  • Turned off “Automatically adjust quality”
  • Turned off “Limit cellular data”
  • Set “Remote streaming quality” to maximum
    Now all my videos play… go figure…
