Unable to play the next episode of TV series after finishing one

Server Version#: 1.23.5.4862
Player Version#: Nvidia Shield Android app 8.20.1.26670 (caf51fef)

Hey everyone. Recently been having this problem where the next episode, after successfully playing one, doesn’t play at all. The circle keeps spinning for more than 2 minutes at which point I go back to the episode list. I try again and sometimes after 1 or a few tries, the episode will play. This happens whether I click on “Play next” which appears after the end of the episode, or whether I go back out to the episode list and manually click on the next episode. I upgraded to the latest server version, and I thought it might have solved the problem, but it just happened again. Hope someone can help, as it only works sometimes after I spam clicking play and going back and clicking play a few times. This also seems to have happened after I switched to the modern layout, not sure if its related.

I’ve been reading and some issues with the Android TV player seem to be with the ffmpeg certificate error. I’ve reproduced the issue and did the network logging, and that error doesn’t seem to appear in the logs. Also, there is no error message when I attempt to play the episode; the circle just spins until I go back. How do I get the logs here for someone from Plex to take a look?

Edit: I had the issue again and this time I allowed the circle to spin until the screensaver for the Nvidia Shield came on about 5 minutes later, and voila! The episode started playing, albeit the screensaver was on and the audio was from the episode, so it was playing “behind” the screensaver. Not sure what this signifies, but hopefully it helps to troubleshoot this issue?

Oh thanks @flow I thought it had solved it with this build but no, it happened again after I tried the 3rd episode. @sixones I tried this build you linked in the other thread but it didn’t work unfortunately. I have attached the log here.

I clicked on the episode at 18:17:23, and it didn’t play. Around 1 minute later, I went back and tried to play again, didnt work. Another minute later, I went back and tried to play again at 18:19:26, I played again and this time it worked till I ended it around 1 minute later. Hope the log helps!

Could you try to disable refresh rate and resolution switching and see if the issue still occurs?

Thank you for taking a look. Resolution switching was not enabled, only refresh rate was and I disabled it now and it still occurs. I had refresh rate enabled from long ago and this issue only started recently anyway.

Thanks for letting me know, that narrows things down slightly.

Could you kill the app or reboot your device and then reopen the app and try again. This should now use the new demuxer which might of fixed the issue.

It seemed to work, however now I have the problem of the error message popping up. “An error has occured etc…”

I could be wrong, but based on the few I tried, it seems to only happen with files that have EAC3 audio. I’ve attached the log from when this happened today. The error kept popping up a few times when I tried to play, and towards the end of the log, the launcher seemed to crash and went back to the main screen. After that happened, I went back to try the same files with EAC3 audio and they played this time!

Hope the log helps to pinpoint the issue.

That looks odd, the player was unable to start the H264 decoder and failed. Would you be able to share the video with me? I can try it on a similar setup and see if I can reproduce.

It seems like there is a failure with the audiorenderer

“[ExoPlayer][EventLogger] playerFailed [eventTime=3.76, mediaPos=0.00, window=0, period=0
com.google.android.exoplayer2.c1: MediaCodecAudioRenderer error, index=3, format=Format(1, null, null, audio/eac3, eac3, 0, english, [-1, -1, -1.0], [6, 48000]), format_supported=YES”

and it also seems that it’s trying to use DOVI for a video that isnt Dolby Vision if I’m reading it correctly

[VideoUtils] MediaCodec found (OMX.Nvidia.DOVI.decode) for video/dolby-vision

How do I share the video, though? And it was different episodes of the same show that i tried, and also at the end of the log before it crashed I was trying to play another series.

You can either share your server with me via Plex Web, share an episode via the Android app or Plex Web, or upload the video to somewhere like Google drive.

I’m seeing your logs have this:

Caused by: com.google.android.exoplayer2.z2.t$a: Decoder init failed: OMX.Nvidia.h264.decode, Format(0, null, null, video/avc, h264, 8148000, null, [1920, 1080, 0.0], [-1, -1])
	at

You can ignore the Dolby Vision detection, it’s something we always do regardless of the video being played.

I’ve had this issue for a few months on my Android TV (stock Android on Philips TV) streaming from a Windows Server. I’m happy to help debug by sharing Plex access and media if you can instruct me on what you want.

Same issue here for a few monthes on my Android TV app & Windows server host.
Very annoying
Willing to help if needed !

It is one of the most frustration bugs for sure, sometimes the updates correct, then next update back to the same bug. Sadly Roku works much better, just doesn’t direct play everything like android (Nvidia Shield) and the HTPC app doesn’t allow external player, so it renders really poorly.

we did decide after the next time we see it fixed to turn off auto update. we may miss out on other features, but at least this issue will be avoided. we use the playlist feature for shows like "Friends or Big Bang Theory, to play thru out the day, so even when working there is some background noise.

Plex Server 1.24.5.5173-8dcc73a59 on Synology NAS 920+
Player Version Android TV 8.25.0.2866 on Sony Bravia and Nvidia Shield TV.

A few months later and this problem still exists. :frowning:
With the same server, I have none of these problems on my Samsung TV with player 5.25.3.

Anyone ever figure any reliable work-arounds? This problem is pretty consistent for me. Up until this week, I was using the Plex player in my Sony TV. I purchased a Nvidia Shield this week hoping it would fix this, but it didnt. Not sure if this is a server problem of a Android player problem. I think I will set up a temporary Plex server on my Win10 PC and see if that works.
