Unable to record two different shows on two different channels at the same time

Server Version#: 1.32.8.7639
Player Version#:
Tuner Make/Model: Hauppauge WinTV-DualHD
Guide/Lineup name: Local Broadcast Listings
Using XMLTV?: No
Channel number/Name: 7.1 KGODT (ABC) and 5.1 KPIXDT (CBS)
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

I currently have an Antennas Direct ClearStream MAX-V antenna hooked up to a Hauppauge WinTV-DualHD dual tuner, which is then connected via USB to my NUC, running Plex on Windows. Whenever two different shows are airing at the same time, the server is unable to record both of them at the same time, despite both tuners being available. When viewing the DVR Schedule, only one of the shows has a warning sign, telling me that this recording conflicts with other recordings.

To my knowledge, there would be nothing that prevents PMS from recording both shows simultaneously, but I guess it doesn’t like doing that. Is this a known problem, and can this be fixed?

Plex should be able to record/view as many channels as you have available tuners. I have a dual tuner HDHR device, and have no problems recording two shows at once.

In Plex Web, (app.plex.tv) would you please go to Settings → Live TV & DVR and then look under ā€œChannel Sourcesā€. How many ā€œdotsā€ do you see next to ā€œTuner Statusā€ for your tuner device? There should be one for each tuner Plex thinks your device has available. For example, this is for my two tuner HDHR, with both tuners available. A green dot means the tuner is available, and a red dot means the tuner is in use.

If you only see one dot then for some reason Plex thinks your tuner device only has one tuner.

If it is correctly showing two tuners and both are available when nothing is being recorded/watched, then we may need debug level Plex server logs showing when Plex is making it’s decisions on what will be recorded.

I currently have 2 dots, and I have confirmed that both of them are green when both recordings occur.

In the screenshot, this is when only one of the two shows that are scheduled to record are actually recording.

Attached is the debug level PMS logs as well.

Did this start in the December 4th timeframe, and have you tried rebooting your Windows Server where Plex Server runs since? It looks like your Plex Tuner Service hung and didn’t release port 32600, so each time since when the tuner service tries to start it fails because it can’t allocate that port:

Dec 04, 2023 21:33:46.571 [17132] INFO - [I] web_server_t::start. Starting web server on port 32600
Dec 04, 2023 21:33:46.571 [17132] WARN - [E] web_server_t: bind: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted

And then the scheduler is reporting some weirdness that I hope is the result of this. It should be scheduling on device 0, and then either tuner 0 or 1. It is scheduling on device -1 tuner -1.

Dec 14, 2023 17:45:31.297 [26488] DEBUG - [Req#2bcba] DVR:NewSchedule: device -1 tuner -1 airing -1 between 2023-12-26 23:35:00 and 2023-12-27 00:37:00 on channel : ā€˜Jimmy Kimmel Live! - Jimmy Kimmel Live!’

I am not sure of the exact date of which I started, however I did start the recordings fairly recently, so it is plausible that it started in the December 4th timeframe. I have restarted my computer (it is just a NUC running Windows 10 Pro with Plex installed, if that matters), however the recordings where these errors occur are pretty far out.

When the tuner service attempts to allocate the port, is that something that I can fix in my router settings? I haven’t modified my router for anything Plex related except port forwarding for remote access.

In this case this is a port that Plex opens on your windows computer for interprocess communication between the Plex Server process and the Plex Tuner process, and your router isn’t involved.

On a particular computer only one process can actively listen on each unique port.
Most likely your Plex Tuner process didn’t shut down correctly at some point, and didn’t release port 32600 as it should have. If this is the case a reboot should release that hung process and port. It is also possible that some other process on your computer was introduced that is competing with Plex to listen on port 32600.

Let’s see if this resolves the problem. I’m cautiously optimistic, but if the problem continues then a new set of debug logs would be useful, and we can run commands to verify what process is listening on that port.

Just wanted to update this post in case anyone else has this problem. I have tested recording two different shows on two different channels at the same time, and it has successfully done so. However, the initial two programs are still showing the warning symbol.

Since the system restart have you tried removing these two problematic series recordings and recreating?

Yes, I have and it has shown the same warning message.

In Plex Web, under Settings → Live TV & DVR, is only a single tuner device showing under the ā€œChannel Sourcesā€? I’m just looking to confirm that only your ā€œWinTV-dualHDā€ device is showing, and that it is still listed only once as in your previous screen shot.

Assuming only one tuner device is showing, if you want to pursue this then remove the series pass for the show(s) that are not working. Then restart your Plex Server process, wait a few minutes, and then schedule the problematic show(s) again. When done export your debug server level logs again and post them here.

Yes, the only tuner device showing is my WinTV-dualHD tuner, and it is still listed only once.

I have canceled the recordings, restarted the entire PC, and tried to schedule them again. The logs are posted.

I believe that I now see the problem, and if so Plex is behaving as it should. Here is what I’m seeing you are attempting to schedule the evening of 1/8 and the early morning of 1/9 :

  • 1/8 23:35:00 - 1/9 00:37:00 - Jimmy Kimmel Live! - E43
  • 1/8 23:35:00 - 1/9 00:37:00 - The Late Show With Stephen Colbert - E33
  • 1/9 00:30:00 - 01:00:00 - Family Guy - E14 - Underage Peter

So on 1/9 in the 7 minutes between 00:30:00 - 00:37:00 you have three shows that are requested to be recorded, but only two tuners.

In the latest version of your logs it looks like you have Jimmy Kimmel and Family Guy episode as higher priority than Stephen Colbert, so it chose to record Kimmel and Family Guy, and I think in your recording schedule it will be currently showing Colbert as unable to record due to conflicts, which is actually correct.

If you can confirm then the good news is that your Plex instance is now functioning as it should, and you can use your recording prioritization to be able to manage what you want to record. For example, if you want Colbert to be a priority over Family Guy then go to ā€œLive TV&DVRā€, and under ā€œRecording Priorityā€ just drag Family Guy lower than Colbert.

Please respond if this helps and/or resolves your issue.

It worked! I moved the priority for Family Guy below Colbert and it successfully recorded both of the shows at the same time. The recordings for both Kimmel and Colbert carry over to the next day but still show up on the previous day, which is why it looks like the Family Guy recording would not influence it.

Anyways, I truly appreciate your support and patience with this problem, and I wish nothing but the best.
