Hello all, i’m having trouble accessing my second plex server from outside of my home network as following:
1st server - Rpi4 on Bookworm, forwarding is done on a generic port 49xxx (both in router and plex server), no firewall - works like a charm for the better past 2y or so.
2nd server - just got an optiplex (3070 i5 16gb ram 256ssd), fresh install of Win11 Pro licensed. Plex (both app & server) installed from Windows Store (1st try, than from plex website as well). I’ve setup the server on a generic port 49xxx (both in server & router), no remote access.
Disabled firewall completely, enabled and played around with firewall rules, disable again, nothing works.
Installed and reinstalled Plex server from both Store & website multiple times, no luck.
Port shows as open in canyouseeme.
i can see both my servers listed in the WebApp, tinker even with the Rpi4 server, disable remote access and enable it again (enable/disable the Rpi4 one from Win11 webapp), works perfectly every time, but the one on Win11 simply doesn’t want to start no matter what i’ve tried.
I want to replace the Rpi4 server on the optiplex and upgrade to Plex Pass, but without remote access there is no benefit as i’ve got a few siblings relying on it being remote accessible.
i’ve also tried the same on a fresh win10 Pro install with the same outcome. What in the name of …i simply don’t understand what is the difference between setups or what’s going on.
Any thoughts and/or suggestions are highly appreciated, i’m willing to pay if anyone cracks it, i’m simply hopeless at this point …
Neither of the servers on your account show as using a port in the 49xxx range. are you sure you put that in the Manually specify field. Else it will just request the router assign a port via UPnP
@BigWheel
My apologies, the rPi4 is running on port 24689 and is working fine as it is, as for the optiplex one i’ve switched between win10 and win11 a few times in the past few days so i’ve lost track of all the combinations i’ve used, but regardless of the port i try, it will simply not work.
i’ve also tried multiple times running on default port with no luck.
i’m planning to install ubuntu later today to give it a try as well, but i can feel the same result .
any input is highly appreciated. Many thanks!
Edit to add reply to @OttoKerner as well.
Thank you for your interest as well, but there is no support in documentation for this. i’ve gone over it a million times before opening a thread.
But there is. The support page explains in great length and step-by-step how to manually create a port forwarding and assigning a custom port number.
This is what you should check first.
Don’t forget to also verify that the network connection on your Windows machine has been classified as “private” and not “public”. Otherwise your server is not accessible.
Thank you again for your reply @OttoKerner, but i’ve exhausted all the basic troubleshooting.
Port forward is correctly set - i’ve done it successfully (at least once, reason for which the rpi4 remote access is functioning properly). Network is set to Private as well. No double NAT confirmed by the difference between IPs in my router and the publicly displayed one (they are the same).
Update: i’ve just tested with an ubuntu “test” environment (not installed on the machine, but running off a USB stick), with no luck either. There has to be something off somewhere, i just simply can’t put my finger on it.
Will have a chat with ISP, although the customer support is as supportive as a literal rock off the street …
Where? In your router?
And if so, did you tell Plex that this portforwarding exists and which public port number you have used for it?
Because currently plex.tv seems to be of the opinion that the public port number for your Windows server is the default number 32400. Which is certainly possible to use, but not advisable.
In the router, yes
Yes
Yes, i’m currently testing (again) with 32400/32401. (back to stock kind of thing)
it changes to green tick after a lot of “retry”, if i switch categories (on the left panel) it becomes red again. Even if i keep the page “unrefreshed” and the tick persists. i am able to connect from outside for a fraction of a second, then the stream dies on me, but the page keeps displaying green tick with no connection to the server. - but it doesn’t do this all the time, i’m lucky if i manage to stream a few seconds.
L.E. ISP confirmed ports are opened as i’ve tested with support 5 ports. all show as open on their side, but when i look them up online, it shows as closed on my side. They also confirmed the rPis4 port as opened. i honestly don’t understand. i just simply don’t …
Out of desperation I will try replacing my modem soon. it’s an ONT from ISP, will change that to bridge with a new router/modem. to see how it goes. Will update. Baffling …
