Unable to Remotely Connect to Plex on Private DNS Server

I am currently running Windows Server 2016 on my Plex Server. I have a domain set up and a private DNS. My ISP is Virgin Media and the modem is “Modem Mode”. My router is plugged into my modem and has a direct connection to the internet through a static IP.

My plex server is set up so that devices external to my network can connect and playback movies. If I use Virgins own DNS servers, this works seamlessly. But if I use my own DNS server, Plex fails to establish a remote connection.

Port 32400 is closed when using my own DNS server, however, firewall is disabled.

Please may you advise?

this might help https://support.plex.tv/articles/206225077-how-to-use-secure-server-connections/

in essence plex does not self cert for secure connections it must be given the info

Thank you.

I have now enabled Plex to be able to be accessed securely, but the remote access is still failing to connect. When accessing Plex externally, it goes through a relay which only handles unto 2Mbps without the need for transcoding.

Is there anything I can do on my end to get my DNS server working with Plex? If I go to https://portchecker.co/check port 32400 is closed, but if I revert my router back to Virgins’ DNS servers, the port is then opened.

This is really confusing as DNS has nothing to do with ports.

Any help would be appreciated.

then you may need to confirmed your DNS server with port forwards and static routes to the server ip

Interesting - You are right. I created a static route from my DNS server to my internal default gateway. But why did this work? All of the IP addresses are on the same subnet. Or is it because my WAN is sitting on a different VLAN, according to my router?

you already answered it your second vlan created a private subnet with in your ip pool and that made a kind of double nat once plex was able to have the secure cert and then your dns knew how to route the traffic. plex worked.

wish i could explain it better or knew if i was right i am just a bit good at finding fixes from time to time
