Unable to save changes to Agents

Server Version#:linuxserver/plex up-to-date
Player Version#:

Plex is taking a file name like Poltergeist (1982) - 1080p and displaying it as “Poltergeist.1982.1080.AAC-264x”

Checked Agents in Plex and only “Local Media Assets” and “Personal Media” are selected with the latter greyed out and unselectable.

Select The Movie Database, move it to the top as first agent and realize there’s no “Save”. I click on my Library and rescan (only two movies as I test this system out so no biggie). Display name of movie doesn’t change. Go back to Agent settings and all agents are back to where they were originally. TheMovie Database isn’t selected or even visible.

I go to my separate Windows Plex Server (which is working and grabbing/displaying metadata correctly) and its the same issue. I know I had other Agents set up a year or two ago and now it’s just local and personal but that system/server is still working fine.

What am I missing?!?!?!?

I googled for “Plex Agent won’t save” and found a small handful of posts with no real resolutions. There was a post somewhere (can’t link right now) from May 2017 with my exact issue detailed but no resolution.

I’ve tried Firefox and Chrome Browser.

I’m going nuts.

Well, after more searching I found another similar post. The naming issue was related to metadata in the mp4 files. However, I still cannot select any Agent other than Local Media Assets.

I am uncertain if this is Windows or Linux since you checked both classifications.

I cannot help with Windows but, if you are using Linux,

  1. Stop PMS
  2. sudo chown -R plex:plex /var/lib/plexmediaserver and let it run (it will take time).
  3. Start PMS

It’s happening in both my unRAID PMS and my Windows PMS (I’m transitioning to unRAID and testing it out). Thanks to a great fellow in r/PleX I see that I can see what Agents are actually being used by

“clicking the ellipsis(…) next to the library and selecting “edit” and once that screen populates go to “advanced”.”

By doing that I see my Library Agent is set to “Plex Movie” and “TheTVDB”. It’s just weird because when I go into “Server Settings” instead of the Library Settings, neither Plex Movie nor TheTVDB appear until I click on them, and only then can I change the order of priority. If I click away and then return, they are missing from the priority list again.

BUT as I mentioned above in my first reply, the issue I was having was actually related to metadata imbedded in mp4 files. I’ll call it a wash.

The embedded data is being read by the local media assets agent. If you don’t want these read, you can turn that off. But that also means you lose other local content if you have any.

Ok, I just realized what I wasn’t understanding.

In the server settings, when you select the Agents, I though you’re selecting which agent you want to use (PERIOD) and in what order (PERIOD). NOW I realize that this is where you set up the preference for HOW each Agent is used; not WHETHER each Agent is used. THAT’s been my confusion. I thought I was selecting which Agent to use. Ugh…

So in summary: To setup HOW the agents are used, go to Settings, Agents. To setup WHICH Agent is used click on the ellipsis(…) next to each Library you have and select “edit”. Once that screen populates go to “advanced”.
