Subtitles suddenly started appearing with update

I use Plex to stream recorded OTA broadcasts to my Vizio TV.

Two days ago I updated the plex server to 1.3.3.3148. Since then all my OTA streams have closed captioning subtitles. Going to the show menu the option to enable or disable subtitles is disabled. I did not do anything other than update the server.

How do I get these subtitles to go away?

Also, when I play the shows on a PC or other device the closed captioning subtitles do not appear. It only happens on the vizio TV app.

Over 2 weeks and no replies? Is there something else I need to provide to resolve this problem?

@joelshort I can’t help you with Vizio TV as I don’t own one, you’ll have better luck asking in Smart TV section of the forum, which you already did.

Try providing some information see if I can help you.

Are you using DVR to record live broadcasts (similar to Homerun), or are you manually adding them to your library?

In library, did you create it as Movies/TV Shows, or as “Other”.

Only reason asking these questions is maybe you’re using an agent which is fetching subtitles to you, or perhaps they’re embedded. Other than that, I have no idea. Check your logs, see where the subtitles is getting fetched.

Thank you very much for the reply. I have been using the same set up for a few years now and this has never happened before. I have 2 HDHomerun tuners. I use NextPVR to record OTA broadcasts, and MCEBuddy to prepare the recordings and put them in the proper folder for Plex to find.
I have two libraries (Movies and TV Shows) and set up the libraries with those settings (Movies/TV Shows).

Can you give me some guidance on where the logs are located and what to look for in the log (“where the subtitles are getting fetched”)?
Thanks again.

To check your own logs, open up Plex Web App from the browser, then goto settings.

From there, under Server tab, on the left side you’ll see “General” “Optimized Versions” “Remote Access” etc…
At the bottom, you’ll see “Help” … go there and click on “Download Logs”

It’s usually best to try and play the media for about 1-2 minutes, close it, then download the logs

the logs might overwhelm you at first if you don’t know what you’re searching for (I know it does for me), but usually try to search the most common error you’re facing, for example the agent or the PMS Analysis and see whats fetching the subtitles.

You might need a help from an Expert or Plex staff.

EDIT: Take note of the timing of when you started the Movie/TV Show and when you stopped. Makes searching for it a lot easier by Time.

Ok I did a little digging with your Vizio TV. It shows that the Closed Caption is controlled by your TV (some of my sources comes from here, here and here … and there’s more)

What I understand is that CC (Closed Caption) is generated from your DVR, basically its sending the signal to your TV, where you can control the CC to turn it on or off. It has nothing to do with Plex Server.

Hopefully the mystery is solved <:-P

This is what I thought from the start, but changing the CC in the TV didn’t do anything. HOWEVER, ironically, the Vizio TV had an update last night and now the CC is gone!

Glad it worked

The websites I linked gives you a step by step instructions on how to turn off CC permanently on your TV

Dangit. Closed caption subtitles are back on some recorded OTA shows on my Vizio TV. I just can’t figure this out. I have turned off CC on the Vizio TV. These subtitles do not appear on any other device when streaming.

Around the same time that these subtitles started appearing, I had used Handbrake to process some DVDs I had into mp4 format for streaming via Plex. In Handbrake I added a subtitle track to the movie using the “forced only” designation, meaning subtitles will appear when forced in the movie itslef (like when actors speak a foreign language, but otherwise the movie is in English). At least I think that’s how it works.

Could those movies have somehow affected the overall way subtitles get used? I’ve never had this problem before but I also have never added a subtitle track to the movie.

I know that if you have a “forced” subtitle SubRip Text (.srt), that subtitle will always start start with that specific media. It doesn’t matter whether the actors are talking in foreign, alien or local language, as long as there’s text within the subtitle, it will display it.

Plex has an option to display subtitle when a foreign audio is chosen (depending on your chosen language for plex). But that’s a different story.

But if you’re saying that closed caption is on again (excluding the forced subtitle tracks you were refering to) even though its off on TV. Then I’m positively sure its from your cable box, digital receiver, satellite box or something connected via HDMI that is sending you those closed captions.

If you have something that’s hooked on (and I believe its your DVR/cable box) then use its remote, goto its settings and turn it off.

A quick search on the internet and I think I found your answer HERE. It may be old, but hope that helps you.

EDIT: Just wanted to add another site HERE from yahoo answers on how to turn CC off.

I don’t have cable or satellite.
Here is my system:
HDHomerun connected to wifi router via ethernet
Plex Desktop PC connected to wifi router via ethernet - used to record OTA broadcasts
Vizio TV connected to router via ethernet
XBox One connected to Vizio TV via HDMI
Sony Blu-ray player connected to Vizio TV via HDMI

The only time subtitles appear is when streaming through the Vizio Plex app. Streaming through the Xbox there are no subtitles on the TV.

I will double check the XBox and Sony player to make sure CC is turned off.

Don’t have an answer, but I am seeing the exact same behavior. Recorded OTA tv shows display subtitles only in the Vizio plex app. Closed captions are turned off in the TV menus. I’m wondering if it is related to the language settings on the recordings themselves?

I don’t pretend to understand why this is happening either, but I don’t see how it could be something on the recordings themselves. The same recordings play without subtitles on any other device (Xbox, computer, tablet). It is only on the Vizio TV app that the subtitles are forced. This started happening after a Vizio TV update.

I completely agree, behavior started after the December update to the Vizio app and is not present on other Plex players.

I’m having the same issue. OTA broadcasts recorded with Plex DVR show subtitles that I can’t turn off when viewing on my Vizio TV. I don’t have the issue if I watch via the web player or my Roku stick.

I’m having the same issue, Subtitles (Cosed Caption only on the Vizio Tv)
Plex for Vizio (Vizio MTK)
2.13.4
Plex TV

Plex server Version 1.5.0.3501

Same problem here. Please fix!

I have the same issue on the iOS app when watching live TV. I can’t find an option anywhere to get rid of the closed captions.

I’m having this problem as well with the latest update and I DON’T have a Vizio TV. HDHomerun and watching LiveTV there are Closed Captions. I’ve gone into the HDHomerun app and turned off the closed captions. They come on using just the plex.tv web player so nothing but plex once off the HD. Not running through anything else. Seems something in the server is telling the LiveTV to turn on captions.

What’s worse is the size of the captions covers about 1/3 of the screen.
