Unable to Share Library with Home Users - RESOLVED

Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: 3.77.2
Plex Server is being run on Synology 916+ (DSM 6.2.1-23824 Update 2)

Trying to do something simple, add couple Home Users and share a library.
I activated and invite the “Guest” account and also created a new “TV” Home Account.

No matter how i try to share the library it says “no libraries”
manage > Library > share
Home Users > Guest or TV > Edit > Click on Plex Server in left menu
note: Server name is coming up as “Available”

I have no issues logging in and using my PlexPass master account across any devices (Laptops, Desktops, Tablets) on the home LAN and watching content in either of the two libraries.

I spent a few hours searching this on google and in this forum but could not find the same issue. I try and follow the Plex Guide and everything is identical except i don’t have an option to “tick” the shared library box under the Home guest accounts.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Checking your account, I see multiple servers associated with your account with the name “DISKSTATION”. I think something is getting confused. I don’t think you are installing the updates properly. Check the server tab under devices in Plex Web and remove all your old servers.

Hi,

I am installing Server updates via Manual Package on my Synology. Download it from the Plex site (64bit for Synology), stop server, then update it.

About 3-4 months ago Synology did a OS update automatically and my Server dropped out. Ever since then I’ve had an issue where Plex Server just disappears / drops off every few weeks, and I’ve not been able to figure out why. Basically what happens is it works fine for a while then one day i get a message on my player (in the lounge room) that it cannot find the Server (DISKSTATION). I log into my NAS and log into the Server client and i get a message saying “You do not have Server Client installed” (which I absolutely do). I check update logs for all the devices and nothing has changed. The only way I’ve been able to fix this is by deleting the three core database files (db-smh, db-wal and the other one) and re-create the databases. I’ve also done a full uninstall, delete plex folder and start from scratch. I’ve tried researching this topic and found quite a few posts with the same server client install error but there has been no clear resolution.

Anyway, I did not realise these Authorised devices may impact how it the PLEX environment works. This may fix my current library sharing issue and my ongoing server failure issue as well.

Server Update:
What is the correct way to update the package on the Synology.

I’m removing all the devices now and will report back if it fixed the problem, thanks for responding so promptly.

I’m not very familiar with the Synology devices. I would start with this FAQ page. Synology FAQ's ... Read This First!

Ok thank you, I’ve read the Synology FAQ. I am updating correctly and as per instructions. My certificates are also up to date.

I’ve deleted additional Servers that were coming up as authorised devices, and i’ll triple check the NAS side connection settings (from the FAQ) and report back.

Hi,

I’ve follow above advice and removed all the additionally authorised servers which were the previous installs. I’ve also reviewed Synology FAQ. The only change i made adding read / write permission to the Media folder (plex user account). Plex folder already had full access by the plex account. I dont think this would make any difference as it works fine with the master user account

I’ve signed Plex server out and back in and restarted the Server.

Still same issue, when i go into either of the Home Users (TV or Guest) and Select DISKSTATION which is the available Plex Server it tells me there are no libraries (as per screenshot top post)

Hmm. I can see you are down to 1 server. However, it shows it has 0 libraries. I think you may have removed the wrong server. Or something is still wrong with your setup.

Hey,

I’m tried to delete servers based on their age date. I don’t think i deleted wrong server, but i am not 100% certain.

I can log in to any device on my network, Laptops, Tablets, PC’s with a player login with the Master account and watch the two (Movies, Shows) libraries tested last night.

Is there a way to re-authorise a device? eg. if i delete all authorised servers and log back in on the current one, would that reset the Authorised device settings?

If not suppose i can delete the whole lot and start again… I’ve done it so many time in recent months i don’t have that much to loose.

I don’t know what’s going on, but what you are seeing doesn’t seem to match what is going on with what your server is telling Plex. That information is what’s used by your clients. It may be easier to erase all your servers and just start over. Maybe give it a different name just to be clear that it’s a different server from what you had before.

Ok,

I’ll wipe the lot, folder and installs change the Server Name and see how we go from there. Maybe couple days before i can report back. Thanks for your help.

Good luck.

Hey,

Looks like it’s fixed. I was now able to add shared library to the additional Home Accounts that i setup.

What i did to resolve:

  • Stop and uninstall plex Server

  • Delete Plex folder

  • Log into Plex.tv online account and Delete All authorised devices

  • Change Hostname for my NAS, and reboot the device (just because rebooting stuff fixes random things)

  • rename Media folder

  • Re-install Plex Server on NAS (manual package install, latest 64bit version)

  • Follow Plex Wizard to setup library’s again

  • Configure appropriate settings and behaviours for library

  • Was able to immediately add “all Library” to the additional Home Accounts.

Hopefully this resolved all my issues, not only the sharing issue but also the loosing the server issue that i get every few weeks.

Thanks for the insight into Authorised Devices, i did not realise how they may impact the Plex environment.
