Unable to use hw transcode until I remote into my Plex server

Server Version#: 1.28.2.6151

I have an older PC running as my media server (using an i5-3470). I am on Windows 10. I am only using MPEG2 and MPEG4 content. No H265 content is involved, and I do not have any 4K media. Tone mapping is disabled.

When I was running media server version 1.24.5.5173-8dcc73a59, the hardware transcoding was working without any problem. I recently updated to latest because I wanted the “Edition” support.

With latest, Hardware transcoding fails to work. Until I remote into the computer via RDP, and then close the remote session. It then works without any problems.

I’ve tried adding a dummy HDMI plug. No change.
If I remote in via a VNC client. No change.

Remoting in via RDP then leaving seems to kickstart something. I’m just really unsure as to what.

There hasn’t been a change to PMS that would cause this that I’m aware of. Did you try rolling back to that version to double check that it did break?

Check out Windows Remote Desktop breaks HW Transcoding (QSV) - Here's the fix! and see if that might help. If you used Remote Desktop to start PMS, check the last comment in that thread.
