in temp location with no internet access, moving, and have discovered, with much happiness, both roku/shield plex cannot find the server. the server is win10; router connected for clients and server machine, but nothing else.
I tried every option I could find with server and the clients, e.g., no secure connection required, disable firewall on server machine, win10 pro 64b, manual ip provided, dlna turned on, etc. both roku and shield have ip, local network, but not finding server. I went back a year for the server, no joy.
so, it appears this thrilling revelation is forced by plex on roku and shield.
am I wrong? if wrong and no internet required, then what is the magic configuration?
if I am right, then I do not understand why the devs would do this. there are plenty of situations in which users will have no internet access. in my case, I will not have access with a router for 6 weeks…long move.
please advise. no discs, in boxes, and no plex. great.
For that extended a period of time without Internet access, your best bet is probably going to be to sign-out both your server and your clients. On the server, this is done under Settings (Server Name) → General → Sign Out.
Once you’ve signed out of your clients, you should have the option to “Continue as Guest” upon opening them. On Roku clients, you can then go into its settings and configure a manual connection to your server (Settings → Manual Connections). Also configure it to allow insecure connections on the same network (under Settings → Advanced).
I’ve only fully tested this on Roku, but it works fine there. I don’t think Android clients allow the configuration of manual connections, so you’ll have to rely upon automatic server discovery. You’ll need to configure it to allow local insecure connections as well.
You may or may not need to select the “More” option in the sidebar of the client to be able to see your server and libraries.
Note that you won’t be able to sign your server or clients back in to your account until you have Internet access again (obviously?).
