Using a Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD. At first, everything seemed to be working fairly well. But over the next couple days, it has been a horrible time trying to set this up.
I setup a recording to grab my local news cast, the first day, while a recording was taking place, plex just kept popping up saying Recording failed… Over and over again.
I checked the grab directory and I could see the file, but it was 0kb… eventually it was moved to the local TV folder I setup. Except it copied the okb file 31 times… Then for for a couple days it didn’t even attempt to record (or maybe the files are stuck in the grab folder)… then on the 6th it recorded the 30 minute show… but its a 6gb file for a 1 hour show, I thought it might have been a 4k file, but no its slightly above 720p… Okay thats odd.
I’m not too worried about file sizes because I don’t plan on letting local news recordings to stack up.
But now, plex is unable to even stream live tv… giving me tuner errors, and when it does load it is choppy and everyones voice is like a chipmunk… weird…
So I installed the wintv software that comes with this tuner and gave it a shot… it shows perfect picture quality and never looses reception. So I know its not the antenna. I also know its not my hardward (i7 4790k, 16gbram, gtx970, 24tb storage, m.2 boot drive)
So I’m at a loss. I’m willing to completely forgo the dvr functionality of plex, but even the live TV feature doesn’t work. Sometimes it will load a channel, but won’t let me watch actual live tv… forcing me to watch the previous hourish of the feed, which is odd because the DVR isn’t scheduled to record anything… its like plex is caching whatever the tuner was set too or something.
Sorry for my non technical ranting of all the problems I’ve been having.
I’m having the same problem with WinTV-dualHD when trying to run with Plex. It works great when just running the V8.5 software that came for WinTV. So the problem is not my tuner, or antenna.
Yea, I’m about done with this science experiment. I’m trying to find tuner software that will let me just “cast” to my devices at this point… I love that I pay a monthly membership for plex but get zero support of any kind.
I am having similar issue as reported in this thread. WinTV software is working great, but Plex takes forever to tune to live TV, and then is plagued with stuttering, lag, etc. Too bad…I wanted Plex TV and DVR to be solution I was looking for to watch recordings from different devices around the house and remotely.
Does anyone have the WinTV-dualHD ( V8.5 software ) working good with Plex Live TV ? I’m just about ready to give up on this.
I was messing around with this last year but with a Win7 installation and WinTV 8. I wasn’t having great success due to inadequate specs on the laptop and what turned out to be cat5 cable in the house, so I scrapped it with the idea of waiting for Plex to work out Live TV for Roku. But with that setup, I was able to set reliable recordings and extract captions with a prostprocessing script. So I was actually pretty satisfied with the DVR portion.
Before shelling out for new hardware I upgraded a cable and reinstalled the same laptop with Plex on Win10 and WinTV8.5, to try out the Live TV improvements. With this setup, I’ve had less success with scheduled recordings executing reliably (though one rescheduled itself after failing for no apparent reason, which was nice). So I need to do some more testing; but I wonder if the updated Hauppauge driver could be causing problems, or maybe Win10 is (probably one of the continual updates that run silently and screw things up until you reboot, which would be resolved by my planned an upgrade to a Win10Pro machine).
Sorry to ramble, just sharing my experience with this tuner.

I should mention that I can now watch Live TV over Roku, and it works fairly well–looks good, pauseable, RW/FF work fine. But unlike others who can’t seem to make captions go away, I can’t get captions (which I need) to turn on. Like others have mentioned, this is not a problem when watching WinTV8.5 natively. Seems to be just a display thing, since the captions appear to be present for extraction in the recordings.

Nope. I just unplugged the whole thing. If they get it working I’ll try it out… but based on the excellent feedback and support we get for being paying customers… i doubt it will ever be addressed.
I am having a really hard time justifying the membership at this point…
