As the subject mentions, my Hauppage WinTV-QuadHD will work with Plex if I do a reboot/restart for an indeterminate amount of time (maybe a day if i’m lucky) then eventually it will fail to tune any stations (error depends on client but “failed to record live tv” or similar will show up, and some other generic “an error occurred”). If I open the WinTV app on the server I can watch a channel straight away, so the card and signal appear fine.
This is Plex Server and card running on Windows 10, latest drivers installed as of Nov-20 2017.
So far i’ve tried:
Uninstalling and re-installing the drivers
Removing the device from the Plex and re-adding
Only adding 2 of the tuners (shows up as two devices with two tuners each on Plex)
Changing the EPG refresh times
Validating that WinTV app works when Plex isn’t
Anyone else experiencing this? - would love a fix given I signed up for Plex Pass based on this feature and seeing this card as supported.
Yes having similar issues with the Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD where randomly it will not tune any stations.
I’m using The NVidia Shield TV and unplugging the tuner and restarting the shield tv unit seems to fix the problem but works for another week or two and then happens again.
I have the same set up. WinTV-QuadHD and plex. Have been running it now for couple months. I have not had any issues with it and the recordings. I record sometimes 10 shows a day. No issues with the DVR recordings.
I was having issues with the nvidia stream TV and watching Live TV within PLEX. It was dropping the live TV connection. That has gotten better with a few updates on the nvidia stream TV side. I still choose to use Live channel while watching live TV most of the time.
◦Windows: “WinTV 8” (for WinTV tuners) or “AVerMedia TVBox” (for AVerMedia tuners) software might conflict with Plex Media Server’s use of the tuner. If you have issues tuning channels, please remove this software, install only the driver for your tuner, then attempt to scan channels again.
I had my Hauppauge WinTV-DualHD hooked up to my Nvidia Shield and had problems tuning too. I then hooked it up to my Windows 10 box and it seemed better, but still had problems. I then read if you are trying to tune through the web, don’t used Chrome. So, I restarted the computer and stayed away from Chrome. So far I haven’t had any problems tuning like I was before. Nvidia Shield and Roku Express as well as Firefox all working well.
I take that back. Just used Firefox to tune Fox. It worked, then I ended the playback and tried to tune another channel. I get the “no parts” message. Back to square one
Thank you silverbullet07, i’m going to try uninstalling the WinTV software to see if it was a driver conflict under the hood. I’ll update again as to the results.
Install tuners into Plex (both) and re-scan channels and setup EPG.
This worked as expected for the remainder of the night, however, next morning it was back to not working and by not working I mean it can’t tune any channels. Trying from a TV now I get the “An error has occurred, please try again later” + “Recording failed: Live TV - session”.
I am having the same issue. I have the Haupauge Quad tuner card, on a Win 10, i5, quad core machine. It has 8 Gb menory.
I have noticed that many times, the live TV stops when I have been away, watched live TV, then returned home and tried to watch live TV. I am not sure if that helps. When the live TV is unavailable, no scheduled recordings take place either.
It is fixed when I restart the Win 10 box, then everything runs perfectly for a week or so.
I don’y know if simply restarting the Plex server application would fix this or not. I don’t know how to do that and always restart the whole computer. If restarting only the Plex server application would fix the issue, perhaps until the issue is sorted out, the Plex software engineers could put a button in the settings so the application could be restarted remotely. It is not a fix, but a workable work-around.
We were in Florida over Thanksgiving and the live TV stopped. It was very annoying because I couldn’t fix it until we got home.

My dad who is also a plex user was having a similar issue. One thing that would help you to get your server up and going again while you are away would be to use TeamViewer or something of the like. It is a free remote software that allows you to access your computer remotely via smart phone or another computer. It is a life saver on so many levels.
My dad also uses the Haupauge Quad and has been having similar issues. Maybe that is the causing the issue. I am going to have him catch server logs the next time it happens. I know the Plex team has been able to quickly find and fix an issues that I or my dad have had. Its tough to know exactly what the issue is however until you provide logs to Plex.
Still haven’t been able to resolve unfortunately, it hasn’t worked for a few days now (needs a reboot to fix that usually). I’m going to install WinTV back on and see if that picks it up straight away, that should re-solidify the issue is on the plex side of the fence and not hardware drivers or o/s level.
I’ve been having a similar issue ever since I upgraded to Plex Pass and installed my WinTV-QuadHD tuner card in my main server PC that runs Plex. Using Plex’s settings and go through the process of adding the tuner (which Plex has no problem locating the card) without any hiccups. Everything runs fine for a day or two and then I start getting errors on my client device, essentially stating that it can’t communicate with the tuner card. It should be noted that I don’t have any issues playing back videos in my library. Upon inspection on the server side, Plex is showing that it cannot locate the tuner card. If I remove the DVR (delete the tuner card that’s set up) and then try to re-add the card, it shows up immediately and I can then re-setup the card as a new DVR. Everything works again and the cycle repeats. My server PC is running Win7 64-bit Ultimate.
I’m not sure if Plex Staff read these, but if anyone thinks it’d be beneficial to send a debug log or has any suggestions on how to correct this issue it would greatly appreciated as I keep getting the eye-roll from anyone that I’ve talked about how great my setup is and then witnesses the tuner failing and live TV being broken (usually it’s my wife).
It does make me wonder if this ‘supported’ card is actually any more supported than the community supported devices. In some way’s I think there’s more support in the community actually. Anyway, just wanted to chime in to say I have a similar problem but in Ubuntu. To that end, it could be driver / firmware related.
Is it possible to flag a developer in the supported forums to get a canonical answer on this? - it seems a bit silly for us users to be guessing our way around a “supported” card, developers should want to know about such issues.
I have problems too with same setup. Install and scan for channels works perfectly. However, on all recordings the video freezes every 20 seconds or so whilst the audio continues. Live TV also buffers. Playback of my media library of ripped blu-rays and DVD’s work perfectly. Note: I have tried playing recoded Plex DVR recordings using VLC Player and they work fine so it must be a Plex issue. Setup is Windows 10 64 bit. Hauppauge Quad HD. Server hardwired to router. Main clients are iOS but replicated problem on Amazon Fire Stick.
