Unable to watch movie/tv show when Libraries are updating.

Hey guys,

I have recently experienced issues watching movies/tv shows whilst the Plex libraries are updating. This occurs on multiple clients, iOS, Apple TV and Web and even happens on localhost. I have tried everything I can think of and the only solution is to remote into my plex server and stop any library updates that are running.

Version 1.1.4.2757

Has anyone else had similar issues?

Serving from what?

A Mac OS X PMS

What are the issues you see?

The issues are unable to stream it just constantly “loads” and doesn’t progress.

Sounds like disk or cpu bottlenecking as the library is getting thrashed during a scan

The issue I find is that when I have auto update library checked and I copy a large number of files to the server via smb… that the transfere rate that is normally gigabit maxed out of over 110MB/s slows down to ~50MB/s soon after the transfere… watching on the server via ssh as soon as the transfere starts and plex sees a change in the folder, it begins a library update, downloading meta, and building chapter markers etc… starts thrashing the drive and other resources are not competing…

Likely what you are seeing here…

A suitably wide stripping of disks that give you good IOPS should limit it but if your transcoding and your library, transcode temp dir and everything else is on a single drive or not stripped it will likely bottleneck…

Not everything can be diagnosed with plex log data…

For example … if running plex in a esxi VM

Logs can look fine with no complaints but if the drive backing the plex library has high io wait times … i.e. Bottlenecked… it just wont work and plex logs wont show any issues… it just happily waits for its io request to complete even if it takes a week…

i have same issue

When updating "tv shows " all shows dosent work, and all video have “audio: none, subtitles: none” and you cant play it

sometimes tv shows get “stuck” in it and you cant play it anymore, even if no update is running

It seems, for me at least, that the latest PMS update has resolved the issue… Haven’t experienced the it again since… Yet… Will keep you posted…
