My money is on the PGS subtitles in Pacific Rim as the cause of the transcoding.
Browsers and a significant number of other clients won’t be able to deal with those.
Plex Web does not support HEVC video. Playing any HEVC video via Plex Web will result in a video transcode.
The Plex client on LG (and Samsung) TVs does not support image based subtitles such as PGS & VOBSUB. Enabling either results in a video transcode. If the audio is transcoding, enabling SRT subtitles also forces a video transcode. If the audio is direct playing/direct streaming, enabling SRT subtitles will not force a video transcode (the video may still transcode for other reasons).
If I remember correctly, enabling SSA/ASS subtitles can also force a video transcode. If the subtitles have formatting information such as position, color, etc., Plex has to burn them into the video to honor the desired formatting.
Do you have 4K & HD versions of the movies in the same library, with a number (indicating multiple versions) in the upper left corner of the cover art?
You can pick which version to play using Play Version. See screenshot from Plex for Windows below. This is not supported on all clients.
Consider keeping 4K & non-4K media in separate libraries (ex: Movies & Movies-4K). This will minimize users selecting 4K media when using non-4K capable clients.
Try analyzing the movie, then refreshing the metadata.
If all else fails, do the Plex Dance (you will lose play history, etc).
Here’s an excellent guide to converting PGS/VOBSUB to SRT. It can come in handy if you want to convert some PGS subtitles, such as when Na’vi is spoken in Avatar.
