Unuasual amount of clients randomly connecting indirectly?

Server Version#: latest available on unraid

This has rarely been an issue but I’m noticing it happening more frequently. wondering if there is some new issue that’s cropped up for people?

my “remote access” seemed stable as “fully accessible” but just now while looking at it it flipped to “unavailable” twice very briefly!? …so now I am thinking maybe it’s on my end?

I am on 1gb fiber connection through ethernet. I do not have a manually specified port enabled. Auto is connecting to 32400. Could changing this help resolve my issue? Is it possible my ISP is hiccuping? and that is causing people to connect indirectly?

Also, I have a client who says subtitles stopped working (fire TV). Is this a side effect of an indirect connection?

Indirect means your Remote Access port cannot be reached by the server at Plex.tv

I looked at your Plex.tv account.

You want to check port forwarding and firewall and confirm your port “15xx2” is forwarded to port 32400 of the server.

The IP addresses of the servers which perform the Remote Access tests are here:

https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/plex-sidekiq-servers-list/sidekiqIPs.txt .

Currently they are:

54.170.120.91
46.51.207.89

Make certain these IP addresses are not geoip blocked.

Auto port forwarding means that your PMS is using uPnP protocol to configure the port forward on your firewall/router automatically. The port used will vary depending on what PMS negotiates with the router each time, and can change from day to day.

For this reason I prefer to manually set the port forwarding so that it is constant and one less thing to worry about when troubleshooting. However, this requires at least the following two things:

  1. Your PMS must have a static IP in your internal network (your LAN IP not your WAN IP)
  2. Your router must allow you to configure a port forward. Many ISP supplied routers don’t let you do this.

Router is an Asus AX89X.
I had ports forwarded but I forgot to redo it when I migrated to unraid and had no issues till now! I fixed it hoped fully that does the trick!
If I want to manually change my internal port what is number range to use?

Also can confirm that indirect connection was causing a client’s subtitles to not work.

Your internal PMS port is fixed, it will always be 32400. The external can be set to whatever you want, although I’d avoid anything low. Personally I just stick with 32400 for the external as well. Some will argue to change it but security through obscurity isn’t really effective.

Changing away from 32400 for the external port is not about security.
It’s just to make it harder for network operators to try and “manage” (i.e. throttle or block) Plex traffic on their networks.

oops I misread the setting, saw the 32400 was auto filled and assumed it was internal since same # …been years since I messed with these settings.

Now it’s doing it again …I waited several days had no issue and thought problem was solved.

Seems worse then before. Only now when it says “not available” it stays stuck in that state a lot longer. I plug the test IPs into my browser and it times out.

Connected clients stay connected and no drops in streaming data.

I’m in Cali. my 1gb fiber ISP is 3rd party contractor that connects to AT&T Enterprise(shows when I speedtest) …any reason those addresses would be “geoip blocked”? …and how can tell?

I just changed my external port #, forwarded it and there was another new unraid plex server update even though we just had one? …so hoping maybe issue was something in the last update?

Nope update and port changing did not fix! It’s still happening!

Can confirm that when “not available” canyouseeme.org can’t see my port.

UPDATE:
Ok, so a couple of days ago my internet went down. I was still connected to my ISP but internet was not accessible for nearly 2hrs. I called to find out what the problem and there was some roadwork being done. Apparently there had been some roadwork going on for the last few weeks. Anyways I have had no port issues since it came back up.

If anyone else has had similar issues and port forwarding did nothing to resolve …then likely the problem isn’t on your side or plex but rather with your ISP.
