Unusable Plex with LG TV after version 1.15

Last good working Server Version#: plexmediaserver_1.15.6.1079-78232c603_amd64

I use an LG TV with the latest LG-TV Plex app.

When upgrading from this version, every later version is unusable. It is slow, it shows a “Buffering…” window in the middle of the screen half the time, it freezes, it fails to respond, clicking through the menus is extremely slow, sometimes it just doesn’t load the video at all. I have tried every version since then, and all have had similar problems. All these versions listed below have such poor performance. They are unusable.

It has become so bad, I’ve kept going back to the last good working version: plexmediaserver_1.15.6.1079-78232c603_amd64

What can I do to fix these problems? I tried finding my logs but I can’t locate any. I am using Ubuntu 19.10.

PMS 1.17.0 is where the new transcoder update began.

DEBUG logs (VERBOSE OFF), capturing the problem, are needed

Okay, I just downloaded the latest Plex version (PlexMediaServer-1.19.1.2645-ccb6eb67e) and installed it to test with. I’m running Ubuntu 19.10. I was testing watching media through my LG 4k TV using the Plex App.

Just updated to Ubuntu 2020.04 today. Tested all versions of Plex media server from 1.15 until 1.19. The problem is STILL happening beginning in the 1.17 version. (Also was unable to install anything after 1.18.2 and newer, but I made a separate thread for that.)

Thank you for clarifying. Here is the zip of my logs. I was using version 1.15.6.1079-78232c603 all the time, but today I tried installing several versions. Sorry if the logs are full of a lot of data.

Just a few minutes before making this post, I installed version 1.18.0.1944-f2cae8d6b and ran the test with the file “[Moozzi2] City Hunter 2 - s02e01 (BD 1440x1080 x.264 Flac) (1).mkv”.

It just sat there with a buffering window, showing only the first frame of the video, and didn’t play any further forward. I hope this helps. Thanks for the attention.

Any update on looking into why the new transcoder doesn’t work for me? Can I help with anything?

I believe I have an answer for your transcoder difficulties, UNLESS your videos are XviD.

For your processor (i5-3570K),

  1. Stop Plex
  2. Open a linux text editor for “Preferences.xml” (under /var/lib/plexmediaserver)
  3. Before the closing />, add VaapiDriver="i965". Make certain to have a space between this and the variable which precedes it.
  4. Save
  5. Start Plex

Okay, so I installed the latest version of Plex (version plexmediaserver_1.19.3.2764-ef515a800_amd64) and tried making that Preferences.xml configuration adjustment.

It is better but still not quite working. The files will load and play IF you start from the beginning (and do not try to resume). But they will not work if you try to skip forward. It just shows the Buffering message and never plays.
