So once again another server update on my NAS that has completely broken the streaming of my Live TV. This is the constant cry after running this setup for the past 2 years and the updates wrecking it every 3/4 months.
It really doesn’t matter what Quality settings I use, or Transcoder settings, on either my mobile, PC or Shield, the tuner starts to play the video and after 20 seconds or so it constantly buffers every 2 seconds. It doesn’t matter if i am streaming locally or remotely it’s exactly the same.
A couple of weeks ago I was able to play 7 HD channels in VLC media player, locally at the same time with no buffering, I can’t even play 1 now. If use KODI locally I get the most amazing quality picture and no buffering.
I have disconnected every other service on my NAS, nothing changes. I have re-installed PLEX with no change. I re-installed my TV tuner - no change.
I don’t know what has changed in the latest 2 updates
PlexMediaServer-1.32.2.7100-248a2daf0-x86_64 24/05/2023 and
PlexMediaServer-1.32.3.7192-7aa441827-x86_64 13/06/2023
Now just 94,847 KB (getting smaller with every version), but both these versions just do not work. with Live TV streamng.
Incidentally I have a 520 mb/s FF broadband connection and 1GB LAN network, this should work and used to very well. It seems every 3 or4 months the update breaks the whole TV streaming.
So … a new update after only 7 days PlexMediaServer-1.32.4.7195-7c8f9d3b6-x86_64.qpkg
and it is fixed. I see in the release notes, there was an issue streaming files.
PLEASE PLEASE Could you just test these updates before you release problematic versions.
I have lost 2 days of my life re-installing stuff only to discover IT’S YOUR FAILED UPDATES … YET AGAIN.
Why don’t you use the old addage… IF IT ISN’T BROKE DON’T FIX IT
I can’t find the information that I read now as it only shows prior to installation.
I recall there was information about transcoder and streaming issues.
There is no doubt that the last two updates completely stuffed the Live TV streamng and that this latest issue has fixed the problem.
I know I am using a PLEX unsupported method of streaming Live TV, however I have been running this for over 2 years successfully and it only ever goes wrong every 3 or 4 months when I introduce a flawed update that affects the performance. I should also add, whenever there is a flawed update, I resort to using KODI and my QNAP VPN to stream remotely perfectly, however inconvenient it is.
I am using a Pi3 B+ and a PiTVHat with TV Headend and xTeVe, (yes I know PLEX engineers would sneer at this), and whenever it does not perform well after an update, I use a new Micro SD card and do complete re-install. This always does NOT solve the problems of jerky streaming or transcoding.
As a small test of confirmation that it is not my kit I can easily replace an older version of my TV OS by using a previous card, which takes seconds and yes you guessed, when PLEX works, I can use any of these previous versions for perfect streaming. This last issue prompted me also to remove and stop all other services running on my NAS, including Home Assistant, Node Red etc, in case I was using too many resources, that also made no difference, I now have all that back up and running, and the Live TV is streaming full HD, brilliantly, remotely as well as locally.
I use TVheadend also along with xTeVe and have no issues streaming IPTV on Plex with the updates in question.
If you’re using a Pi3 to run the Plex server and you choose different quality settings that will force Plex to transcode the stream and a Raspberry PI anything will not be sufficient for transcoding.
The ony way IPTV is going to work on that device is if the stream NEVER transcodes.
Perhaps it’s your device that is failing and not the Plex server software.
Also, the only device worth a damn for streaming Live TV on Plex is the Roku. All other platforms have issues regarding Live TV.
I disagree with you completely you are not reading my analysis properly, nor understanding the issue. I suggest you re-read.
I have run this for 2 years and I know it works with PLEX when PLEX transcode works properly except of course, sadly the ridiculous change of EPG service, which is lacking in support of the UK regions properly.
The Pi3 B+ is more than capable of sending a data stream at full HD.
I use this in South America from the UK, without any issues most of the time, when I am in my second home, that is until PLEX flawed updates break the service.
The Pi3 B+ sends the stream to xTeVe and it will provide original quality without any transcoding,.
PLEX DOES THE TRANSCODE NOT the Pi, the Pi just sends the stream, if PLEX doesn’t work properly the transcode doesn’t work and then that’s why it fails. TV Headend is set to pass the data as is. Proof - KODI doesn’t transcode, it just sends the stream, which is why it always works, albeit only locally.
You are not understanding the issue here, the whole thing works perfectly with streaming directly from TVheadend or KODI, but when PLEX can’t do the transcode or deal with large data streams it fails.
Proof 2:… It now works after the recent update from PLEX, just 7 days after their last flawed version.
Sorry but you have not really grasped the issue here. PLEX is working great and transcoding properly since the update, the Pi as usual is streaming brilliantly as it always does and there is no issue now. I am watching 1080 TV beautifully on a PC, my Shield and my Mobile phone from anywhere in the world.
