Update held me hostage

I thought if I bought this PLEX software and created my own server it would simply run. I didn’t realize that if you don’t keep up with the update it would not allow you to play your own movies…

I must say that when this happens at a dinner party to put a bad taste in everyone’s mind on buying this solution… It was a real party damper to have to go to a PC download the PLEX software . the restart the server and roku…

I must say it’s really bad to be held hostage of your own movie collection.

Can someone tell me what was so important in this update I couldn’t watch my own movies???

Why can’t I watch my movies … I get not being able to use new features but you shouldn’t limit my existing collection…

Apparently, this latest update is destroying our experience. I also can’t watch my movies and series.

You may have been experiencing another problem that coincided with an update becoming available.

You might’ve just been able to reboot the Roku or server. I have to do that occasionally with my android devices and then everything works okay

Just because an new update is released doesn’t mean that your Plex server just stops working

It’s actually more likely that you install the update and then things stop working correctly

When I get a new update I don’t install it immediately

I generally wait and come here to see if there are people having any major problems with it first

I’m actually using an update version on my android device from last December and it still works

Besides the update on 4-22, you always have the option to skip the update completely

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

I disagree. this message specifically stated it would not play the content or movies until the software was upgraded.

This was not a Roku issue…it was specifically a message from PLEX inhibiting any movie on the server from playing…

I’m unclear, what update(s) are you talking about?

There are times when an update to a Plex client will require a specific version of Plex Media Server or the other way around. If you have something set to auto update, this could happen.

There haven’t been any recent changes to the minimum version of PMS required by an app. You mentioned Roku. The last time the app changed requiring a newer version of PMS was back in December 2020, which requires PMS 1.18.3. That version of PMS came out in December of 2019, so if is what you are referring to, you were really out of date.

Sunday the system Indicated I was behind in upgrading here is what I downloaded. Plex 1.19.1

Today 1.22.3.4523 is where I am. Seem you released several versions above 1.8

I’m hoping to figure out how to down log a file to share with the error message. PLEX is hosted on a Qnap server so if you know a short cut on how to get a specific log file with the message that prevented me from running any move I would certainly appreciate because I would love to share that message with you………

if you have a cell phone take a picture if it and add it to a reply.

If the message says the server version is too low try unplugging in your Roku. Some Rokus have a really aggressive cache

Your logs don’t go back that far.

Have you double checked your list of authorized servers to make sure you don’t have an old server associated with your account?

THe sever listed in the log is the only server ever associated with this account. I did verify tonight that is it the only server attached to PLEX

Ok, can you try using the Roku app again and see if you are able to turn on the logging feature. Roku Logs | Plex Support

If you can provide me the log I can look to see what’s going on.

Is it possible the Roku had auto update on Plex player and the player was not compatible with the server version?

Perhaps to prevent this potential issue resurfacing, turn off auto-update on the Roku.
