I’ve had a notice to update the library for a while now. When it first showed up many months ago I think I read that it’s a metadata update and lots of people were having huge issues with it causing their libraries to get all screwed up.
But I’m tired of seeing the update notice. Is it safe to go ahead and let Plex update the libraries? I’d HATE to have to spend lots of time redoing all the names, posters, etc. that I’ve had to fix over the years.
I personally didn’t have any issues. Any fields that are currently locked will not be altered, but the new metadata agent is definitely faster and easier to work with imo. None of my posters or customizations were altered even after a refresh of all the metadata on my server.
If your worried backup your plex server first. That way if it goes very badly wrong based on how your media is named you can just restore back to what you have now. I done this when I was evaluating the new agents many months ago.
I’d however HIGHLY recommend moving to the new agents. They are lighting fast and a vast improvement over the legacy ones.
The new agents are great (way faster and less problems in general), BUT after the update most pictures (posters, background images, episode images) will be changed to new images. That was really annoying. It is a lot of work to change every single image (or at least a lot of them) back to the original… So, the new agents are great, but the update is crap. At least in my opinion.
Only the Metadata that is marked with the yellow lock will be saved. Everything else can change during the update. But you can’t lock the images. Maybe if you have them as local media assets. I don’t know if this would help. But to be sure i saved every picture as local media assets now. Maybe this will help during the next big update.
I have not done it nor will I do it for this reason. At some point I’m going to change my server and when I do, I’m going to start from scratch…I’m not sure how much longer my current desktop can possibly last…It’s approaching 7 years old.
I did the update on my server (appox. 2000 movies and 15000 episodes) and didn’t have a single issue. All the images (posters, backgrounds, and episode images) that I had changed myself were retained and the few that did change did so because I did nothing to change them after the initial match ages ago on the old agent. If you really want to be sure they won’t be changed without having to go through the local media asset dance, I would upload the images in Plex. It’s easy to do and there is a great resource out there called The Poster Database to source your images from.
