Update my library automatically on Synology DS918+ Never Stops Scanning

When ever I turn on the “Update my library automatically” setting it works as expected but it seems to get stuck in a scanning loop.
It does detect new files, so I usually turn it on when I’m about to add stuff, but then the server keeps scanning the folders every few seconds, so I turn it off after.

What I notice is the black scanning pop up on the bottom.
When I checked this setting from a different server (on a Mac) it didn’t behave like this.

Is this expected, and part of the setting?
It seems to me that its more like a loop - Plex scans the files updates log file, DSM check for changes updates log, Plex notice the check and scans again.

Thanks, trumpy.

Could you explain more please?
I have left it on for days and it doesn’t stop.
what does it need to be doing?

I’m not having an issue with maintenance or meta, regular task scans complete fine and all meta data is downloaded.
when I have been turning on/off auto I wait until all the meta is downloaded for the added items.

when I turn it on this is the loop.

7sec scanning=>finished “extra may be downloading”
after scanning bar disappears wait 20sec then repeat above

bring out the logs!

lol

Your other file naming is attrocious.
Your Welcome!

I removed “those” libraries you referenced
It seems to indeed be the issue.
Thanks.

As for filenames…
Can you help me understand Plex standard behavior.
It seems like what you are saying is that if Plex can’t find a match it keeps trying to anyways.

So how should I handle files that won’t match.
(I am aware of this )

The “music” library is an audiobook library - most of them don’t have matches, no matter the naming. I was testing the unofficial Audiobook agent, debating on contributing to it. Do I have to use a .plexignore file for specific files, so it can matches 1/2 of the audio books, and ignore the rest?

The TV files I dropped in from backup drives attempting to unify my media. Most of them aren’t episodes, just clips from shows. (Like the the SNL ones you showed above, one sketch from a show).
Should I name them as TV specials?

I was unaware that Plex keeps trying to match, I assumed if it couldn’t find a match it stopped looking until it was changed.

I have quite a few videos (3-5min) that are not from shows or movies, nor are they personal video.
Can I just make up a name for the show and put it in a Specials folder or would a Samples folder be better so the scanner ignores it?

I had tested the audiobooks as a video library. Since the m4a’s are mp4 containers. It does open up the audio books so the chapters are selectable. I do have most of the media embedded in the metadata of the file - musicbrains can auto name or add custom metadata. Would be great if Plex supported their audiobook naming style.

When I’ve had TV shows with full episodes I have used the recommended structure. I think I’m going to use the Specials / Show - s00e99 for this portion - since they are not the full episode.

I guess not, its just that organizing them by a show name is sometimes more helpful. I guest “other video” for things like commercials. I haven’t just because I have wanted a minimal number of libraries, but I should probably rethink that.

An example that could still go would be a youtube episode from a youtube “show” not really a TV show, but tv Like.

Thanks for the help, I have a much better grasp of how Plex is attempting to work because of this conversation.

awesome, thanks a ton.
