Library scan is not always running after file system changes

Plex Server Version#: 1.25.0.5220
Synology Version#: DSM 7.0.1-42218

I’ve noticed that occasionally a library scan isn’t triggered with file system changes - adding a movie or removing a TV series didn’t trigger a library scan automatically. If I then manually run a scan it picks up the filesystem changes just fine.

This isn’t consistent behavior so I’m having a hard time pinning it down. I don’t know if it was the recent Synology update or a Plex change or a combination. What can I do to help track this down?

I’ve attached logs but don’t know if they’ll be of help until I can try to run the logs shortly after it happens again.

I would say that you are probably better off just doing manual scans, or periodic scans. I have tried automatic scanning on a handful of different platforms and never had much luck with it. It seems like it is really finicky about what it detects. You could try disabling the feature saving and then reenabling it to see if maybe that fixes it, but in all honesty the extra 2 or so clicks to run a manual scan are probably worth it.

I do have periodic scans setup and really haven’t minded running a manual scan lately - it’s only an extra click or two like you said - but it had been solidly reliable for me up until recently. It was just an odd bug to have show up on something I hadn’t had any trouble with before.

@Insomnic_1

Thank you for the logs.

In looking at them, I do not see where Automatic Detection is enabled.

If you have a lot of music or photos indexed, you’re likely overflowing the Synology default notification buffer limit.

That’s easily correctable.

Would you mind:

  1. Enable Automatic Detection
  2. Restart Plex
  3. Wait 3-4 minutes for it to load the list without being interrupted by playback
  4. Download the logs ZIP file
  5. Attach it for review.

We’ll look to see if you are overflowing the default table size

Thanks!

I did update to 1.25.0.5246 just a bit ago and after @Blkbyrd suggested it I flipped the automatic detection and scan settings off and back on again (it was on and working most of the time - unless I’m looking at the wrong setting).

I did restart Plex per your suggestion and here are the logs after waiting a couple minutes. I don’t recall if I updated Plex today before or after flipping the automatic scan checkboxes off and back on again (fiddling between other tasks).

Edit: Pretty sure the timing was I updated to x.5246, turned the Scan Auto\Run Partial off and then back on. Few minute later saw ChuckPa response and then verified checkboxes were still enabled. Restarted Plex. Grabbed new logs.

Thanks, Now it’s engaging.

One thing I am seeing which very likely is contributing to you not seeing media added –

For the most part, your media is not named / structured correctly

Might I recommend a tool like TheRenamer or FileBot or, if you use automation, to setup the rules?

I have the renaming config for Sonarr if you wish.

Thanks @ChuckPa I appreciate you taking a look for me on such a small issue. Something between the Plex and Synology updates recently must have thrown that off a bit as the checkmarks for that were definitely still enabled and the problem persisted randomly even after the previous Plex package update so something wasn’t making the translation. I’m glad it was a simple fix. It might have been @Blkbyrd suggestion of flipping the checkboxes off and back on that finally triggered it.

Yeah, my folder structure is “not perfect” and am familiar with where that can cause a problem for identifying.
I’m being lazy about it really and I know if there’s a mismatch it’s on me but I usually get them sorted (and usually know where I’ll have a hiccup). When I get my new server setup I’ll get it fixed up a bit better with some automation as well. I typically recommend those same tools to others having constant name matching issues or want more automation.

You’re always a big help ChuckPa and I appreciates it. :+1:

Edit: Wish I could mark more than one post as solution sometimes.

Edit 2: heh… I think the example you showed in the log is probably my most egregious folder naming laziness… normally I do flip those names to “Season 1” names… I think I just got lucky and left it.
I feel bad now… I’m renaming some of those really bad ones.

Just noticed another miss … I’ve attached logs in case it helps. I added a movie and two TV episodes. Plex automatically found and updated the movie but only one of the shows.

I added Young Justice S4E09 and Hawkeye S1E03 one right after the other … Young Justice was automatically picked up, Hawkeye was not until after I ran a manual scan.

I’ve attached recent logs in case it helps identify why newly added items are missed occasionally.
