Updated UX Design for Roku Version 6.6.8 is a step backwards

I’m sorry but your response doesn’t seem to make much sense either or inspire any confidence whatsoever in any resolution to this issue. It’s seems obvious nobody really cares.

How can it be “working as expected” when it isn’t? This means that you expect post play OFF to not function for all videos properly since it doesn’t work at all on videos 4:59 or shorter. I’m sorry but OFF should be OFF for all videos regardless of their length. This is a ridiculously stupid error.

You also say you have been discussing this, please tell me how much longer is it going to take to figure this out if you haven’t already done so in the past 2 1/2 years since the issue was first reported? And who knows how long the issue existed before being reported.

I’m sorry but it’s very frustrating to watch Plex have plenty of time to make updates to the app, spending countless hours designing things that are completely unnecessary that people don’t like at all, but can’t take the time to sit down and figure out a way to correct a simple auto play bug, that is very telling of the priorities Plex has, it seems that Plex is far more concerned with presentation and look rather than functionality and ease of use.

Emby doesn’t have this auto play bug, OFF really means OFF on their app so it’s probably best I watch my libraries of shorter videos their for now instead, so my season list doesn’t get bulldozed on Plex being played straight through non stop if I am not holding the remote to back out when a video finishes.

But I guess I should say thanks for replying, I do appreciate that at least. And if you ever do get around to taking this issue seriously and actually fixing it, that would be very nice indeed!

Thank you!

The case is that the setting is for the countdown timer on the post play screen. It’s not general auto play setting, which is the primary difference here. Videos that are shorter than 5 minutes are exempt from post play and always auto play. With that said, we are reassessing this and how it works. While not considered a bug doesn’t mean it won’t change.

Okay, so it sounds like someone didn’t design the post play/auto play setting properly in the first place and that is what is causing this very annoying issue. So when you turn post play “On” or “Off” it’s actually just for the countdown timer that pops up to appear or not, very strange. I don’t know why it would be designed that way and not include the short videos also.

But you are right, and I stand corrected, since this is the way it was designed to function it means that this issue is most definitely NOT a bug at all as I have referred to it, it’s obviously a bad design flaw instead. The countdown timer should have been applied for all videos including the short ones so they would all get disabled from playing the next video automatically when set to OFF.

Well whatever it is that you guys have to do in order to correct this please do so as soon as you are able. And again thanks for your time and explanation of this, I appreciate that very much. If this does gets fixed or there is any further information about this issue please post about it on the other thread about the topic to be discussed further there.

To make one thing perfectly clear, Android has zero relevance to the design and implementation of UNO and how it works on other platforms. Where UNO UI elements have been implemented on Android, both mobile and TV, they have matched the specification and have been comparable to other clients. There is no “dumbing down” because of any specific client device or platform. That is speculation and misinformation and is not helpful to a constructive discussion. Let’s keep this discussion civil, and refrain from speculation regarding other devices and platforms.

100% agreed. Very disappointed with this new design. Clunky, poorly thought out and does not feel comfortable navigating through. Will admit the season change at the top on tv shows is nice but everything else is extremely frustrating. Please bring back the old design or give the option to individuals to choose.

My significant other has been complaining ever since seeing the upgrades in Plex Preview on Roku. The original UNO change was a big hit, so this isn’t a “complains anytime something changes” situation. And the complaints are, IMO, pretty fair for the most part. A few of the biggest annoyances:

  • “Why can’t I restart a show from the beginning anymore? There’s just a ‘Resume’ button now.” (Spoiler: The button is labeled “resume” but if you click it, it unintuitively brings up a choice of resuming or restarting. She knows that now, but the button is annoyingly labeled incompletely.)
  • “Why are they burying the shuffle option under the dots now? It’s one of Plex’s best features and there’s plenty of room”. (Spoiler: I have no idea, the extra click really is annoying. Was the “shuffle” button really that rarely used, to be hidden?)
  • “Why do they have the individual seasons listed at the top, like tabs, but there’s no tab in front for like ‘Series’ that takes you to the whole series? Instead, that’s hidden under, wait for it, those dots again. Why do they love the dots so much?”
  • It made no sense to remove the yellow “unplayed” triangle after being the same for long time. It’s a really weird decision to change that piece of the UI.

I know stuff like these can be fixed, but, well… I not sure Plex even considers them “broken”, since they literally just baked it into this redesign as a conscious decision.

(I didn’t consider the interface to be “dumbed down”, for the record. It’s mostly fine. It’s just surprisingly quirky, and with minor changes that seem unnecessary and nonsensical from the viewpoint of a viewer.)

Based on previous experience when reporting bugs and feedback I was skeptical before even starting this thread that anything would be taken on board based on UX feedback.

The response from the CTO above does not give me any additional confidence. Reading the thread and saying they are always interested in feedback is no action or commitment that what was done is wrong and would be addressed.

I standby my comment above but lets have plex prove me wrong. I however suspect that by the time new year bells ring in 2021 we will still have the basic poor design UX issues we are talking about!

I’m trying not to remember the two years it took to just get The Actor Images placed ABOVE The Reviews along with every single HUB on Pre-Play Screens. I wonder if the threads of users screaming about it for two years were read or generated any interest at all.

I’m also wondering who at Plex thought it was a good idea to change @ljunkie 's near perfect app design - to “THIS”? I wonder if the person making that decision even had a Roku to see what they were changing because I’m gonna tell ya right now whoever actually made the decision this new design is in ANY WAY Better than ljunkie had it - is wrong.

“THIS” is a downgrade from a few days ago. The Roku UNO App, in a few days, went from nearly perfect - a short list of a few things of annoyance/bugginess - to a broken app with an Encyclopedia Sized Bug/Crap Design Punch List we couldn’t work through in 5 years - let alone the 2 we spent screaming about moving some images up the page.

I also do like that the seasons are easily accessible at the top. Seems like that would have been an improvement in the old interface.

So I was browsing the movies last night and noticed that I’m also not a fan of the layout over there.

Most specifically, the space isn’t used effectively at all.

  • Seems you could actually have all the buttons under “More” actually displayed with the amount of available space… or…
  • Tuck the buttons you have under the poster so we can actually see a full description of a movie (it’s a core reason I browse them)
  • Move the title of the film up into the available space and brick the year, runtime, ratings, director, cast, genre all into one informational brick somewhere where it doesn’t give me only two lines of description for a film.

It really looks like 50% of the space isn’t used, which I get in a modern design aesthetic, but sacrificing the description of a movie to attain it is like stabbing the whole process in the heart for feng shui.

Honestly, guys… I would really like to entertain the idea of a rollback, here. It’s not like we’ve moved to Uno, and we have a whole new concept we’re trying to roll with. The cheese has been moved, and not in a good way.

Start over.

The Seasons moved to the top of the page before the disaster we currently see. I even commented on it to @ljunkie and told him he once again worked his magic with those Seasons and he incorporated Backgrounds with two flavors back into the app putting the UNO App even farther ahead of everything else… then a few days after that - we get “This”… out of the blue, for no reason, and the ruination of an almost perfect app is complete at warp speed.

Who ordered the change?
Who “Wanted” “This”?
Who saw the Roku Uno App the way it was - and then wanted this change?

Delurked to agree with Cafe_Diem’s comment and say I hate this UI update. It hides essential functionality (shuffle, play from beginning) away in an entirely unintuitive manner, has far too much dead space, and generally looks unpolished and amateurish.

I genuinely thought something had gone wrong with my Roku just now when I loaded Plex for the first time today. It just looks bugged.

Revert it please.

I LOVE the new Roku interface!! I’m apparently in the minority here, based on feedback I’ve just glanced over. And anyone checking my post history, can verify I’m NOT a straight-ticket-shill for PLEX. I’ve complained about UI shortcomings in the past. So, for whatever my single dissenting opinion is worth, GREAT JOB, GUYS! I STILL want to choke your software guys for the media server file naming/storage conventions. You truly deserve scorn for those choices. But this ROKU player UI…is OUTSTANDING!!

Just wanted to echo what the OP said, and maybe a couple nuances.

The main two problems I have are:

  1. Episodes show the orange unplayed triangle, which I’m used to, but then when clicking into an episode, episodes show orange bars for those that have been played, and it messes with my muscle memory (orange means unplayed!).

  2. As mentioned above, the first screen of episodes doesn’t show the synopsis for each episode; you have to click into one, and then the second screen shows synopsis, along with several extra clicks. Just seems unintuitive.

I know Plex has tried to keep colors minimal, but I sure would like some sort of universal icon for played, unplayed, partially played, and heck, they could even be distinguished by colors other than orange!

I know Plex does make missteps, but often listens to feedback, so I hope that is the case here.

The weirdness of “sometimes you click on things” and “sometimes you just go past them” confuses me every time.

You select a season by clicking.
But you just “go past” an episode. You know it’s selected because the other episodes are dimmed? Ugh, my brain.

Honestly, I think they had it perfect the first time. The “orange wedge” has been a staple piece of Plex since I came on board. I feel like it’s part of the character of the company. As far as I’m aware, that wedge never had any complaints. It just showed up, was unique, did it’s job, and made perfect sense as to what it meant.

Nobody else does the orange wedge.

Good point. All I’m saying is that a progress indicator can be helpful, as opposed to just the binary watched/unwatched.

I just don’t think using a full orange progress bar that indicates watched, is a good idea when also an orange wedge on another page indicates unwatched.

Other than the addition of the Series tabs across the top, there is literally nothing to recommend this version.

The new TV series screen is utterly confusing and infuriating. It adds extra clicks to common processes (like having to click through the episode description to get between selecting an ep and pressing play). ‘Go to show’ is broken.

On a one-series show, you are presented with the carousel of episodes view, the same one you get (by mistake, if comments above are correct) from selecting ‘Go to show’. It presents you with the old orange triangle to show unplayed eps and no orange underscores, but selecting an episode to play from this menu merely takes you to the new horrendous season view with the orange progress bar., so you have to select an ep twice to watch it.

I appreciate that my eyesight requires corrective glasses, but even with them on, I can’t read the tiny ep numbers in the corner on a 55” TV from 3m away. What possible function do they serve, other than to obscure the episode picture? Many of the other design choices (the use of smaller and lighter text) has forced me to select the high contrast option because I can no longer see it against the blurred background. On a related note, and not unique to this update, why is there still no easy access to subtitles? From either the play screen or while watching a movie, you have to go into streams sub-menu and select the subs. Can’t you put a CC button somewhere in all those acres of blank space?

International comments: in the settings, the tool tips for the settings menu are only available in English and, IIRC, Spanish. Certainly, the tool tips when it’s set to French are all in English And please can we have international dates? Literally only one country in the world uses the month-day-year format.

The orange wedge is still there for non TV show libraries so it makes no sense that they removed it for the TV shows and replaced it with a full orange progress bar. It’s like whoever designed the new TV show library setup was a different person than who did the other library types and those people didn’t bother communicating with each other to make sure what they were doing was consistent, which makes the Plex designers look amateurish.

The orange progress bar should only be used for partially watched videos, if an episode is completely watched there should be no progress bar, if an episode is unwatched it should have the orange wedge, very simple to understand.

Also let’s officially go back to “Unwatched” and “Watched” as the proper terms. “Unplayed” and “Played” sounds dumb.

I actually wish Plex could tell the difference between “Played” (but I fell asleep, and would still like to WATCH) and “Watched”.
