Updating a NetGear Ready NAS 314?

I use a Netgear ReadyNAS 314, I am currently running software
plexmediaserver-ros6-binaries_1.14.1.5488-cc260c476_amd64.deb of 102,532 KB?
I notice the new recommended software is now or it will stop working? and to install later
plexmediaserver_plexmediaserver_1.19.5.3112-b23ab3896_amd64.deb of only 78,061 KB?
This is a lot smaller in file size and it doesn’t have the -ros6-binaries_in the file name so I am worried that if I try to upgrade to this version it might not be compatible with my NAS?
Can someone please explain why the later software file is so much smaller? or am I missing something here? Somebody said about completely removing old version and then install new? but how can I back up my library first?
Thanks

Newer client apps will no longer support PMS versions older than 1.15.2.

As for the file size… If I remember correctly there was a major clean-up of the code, dependencies… reducing the build size when Plex introduced PMS version 1.15

Deleting the Plex Media Server app won’t delete your library (I believe that is except for the WD My Cloud environment which is having a very different setup).
If you want to backup Plex’ data first, this support article points out where to find that folder on your NAS
https://support.plex.tv/articles/202915258-where-is-the-plex-media-server-data-directory-located/
That being said… while it’s a huge step from 1.14.1 to 1.19.5 this should actually work… might take a moment for Plex to upgrade the database all the way

Hi, I successfully upgraded to the new version however when I log in on my device ALL my library items are grayed out? Does this update process take a while? and therefore should I just wait? ThanksCapture

WOW!! its now working!!! just took a while as you say to load in my huge library!! Am so pleased! been holding off from upgrading in ages with the fear that these small files weren’t going to be compatible with my NAS?

Here we go again… paid for a product then they make it incompatible with the os/hardware.

Alternative servers anyone?

I strongly recommend you re-read the announcement.
Your server will still work and so do your Plex clients. If your server is still on a version older than version 1.15.2 this means you haven’t updated it since end of 2018. Again… it’ll keep working but you will not be able to use it with newer versions of the Plex client apps.

If you’re stuck on an old version and don’t want to update, consider this announcement a reminder to disable automatic app updates on your clients

Also… please don’t hijack other posts.

Hi, No I was concerned about me having a problem as the newer file versions are alot smaller in file size? However I bit the bullet and installed the newer version straight over the top of the old one, OK it had the sense to UN install the old version first and then went on to install the latest version, however my existing library was grayed out to start with but it was mentioned in the above post it might take a while to update my library and sure enough it’s all back up and running with my existing hardware, so a success!!

Tell that to my AppleTv, all my roku boxes and the LG TVs the latter of which will not allow you to disable updates, and the roku will require latest version when it upgrades the os…

As for hyjacking threads… maybe someone shouldn’t have closed the “announcement “ so we could comment on that…

Oh and 3 days notice!? I was fortunate this time someone (another plexpass user) actually messaged me because they noticed they’ll loose access to my servers… guess I’m going to have to notify everyone to turn off their auto-updates… shame you didn’t give us more time.

It’s been announced in the iOS / Apple TV release announcements nearly 3 weeks ago:

Version 7.4 is now available.

NEW:

  • This will be the last release to support Plex Media Server versions prior to 1.15.2.

Oh, so you’re saying every user has to logon to the community forum and check all latest posts to see if and when something might get updated automatically that will stop them using a paid for service… nice!

…and people called SORBS bad… FML

I’m not… but if you’re running an outdated server you might be interested in those notes. Probably the same as you won’t auto-update software on an out-dated / no longer supported OS or go overboard with a car that’s out of maintenance.

Side note: no need to get into the forum… you can use the forum’s “bookmark” function and can get the announcements you’re interested in by e-mail – just saying.

I maintain the car myself… I maintain the OS … it’s not outdated… but some genius decided that they’d drop backwards compatibility on the Plex server instead only running on the latest and “greatest” version thereby dead ending all the compatible oses that are not based on the “latest and greatest” … but that issue has already been covered once… the OS build server is maintained and version forced by the devs… screw the users.

I get your point. I just disagree in you blaming Plex for you being stuck on an old Server (not even sure if you cannot update because the OS/platform is not supporting newer versions or if you opted to stay on that version for some reason).

My point is that Plex is making an architectural and probably also economical decision. They’re asked to add new features to their platforms. Doing that while maintaining compatibility with older versions of Plex Media Server is additional effort for them. Some newer features use new technologies or APIs that improve things or make them easier to maintain going forward… at some point that requires so many exceptions to support old versions that they have to take that cut/decision.

I have a Samsung phone with Android for Work – that one didn’t get any updates after 6 months. The next one got updates for barely 1 year. So from my point of view 18+ months seems ok. Also… as a user… I’m ok with them moving forward. Less old server versions to be maintained means more developer time to focus on new features and bug fixes.

Then again… I do understand that’s far from satisfying if you’re on the other side of that equation.
But blaming Plex for not updating your server seems wrong (to me).
