My Plex server, running on Windows 10, sees an update and I wish to install it.
First I click on Download and then on Install.
It will display:
The server “My Server” is installing an update
Grab a cup of tea. This may take a couple of minutes.
This will go on forever … it never finishes.
I can grab the update from the website and install it, but that’s not the idea of auto update.
How can I troubleshoot this?
Hi PlexLuver,
did you already finish your cup of tea? Because it sometimes takes a little longer, network issues, a slow drive or even server side issues (not your PMS but Plex’s Download Server) can make your download slow. If you’re sure that’s not the case, do a manual upgrade; go to your Windows machine, dowload the latest version and install it.
As far as I can tell, auto update worked before, so just do this update manually and hope it works again after the update.
I have this with every update, even when I wait more than 1 hour.
The server it runs on is fast, runs with a lot of RAM on an SSD and only runs Plex.
Manual updates are always fine.
It runs as standard, under an admin account, launched at logon, as the app itself arranged.
The installer requires admin, so I’d recommend setting the autostart to admin, that I think enables automatic updates.
Have you ever changed the location of the Plex data folder away from the default?
If you did, follow the instructions under ‘Addendum’ in this HowTo: [HowTo] An extended guide on how to move the Plex data folder on Windows
Yes I did and it works fine.
I had the update issues before the move.
Thanks, I will look at that addition too.
You might want to perform a ‘manual’ update first:
- Stop/quit/end Plex Server with the tray icon
- deinstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows (do not use 3rd party ‘Uninstaller’ software like Revo etc.)
- for safety, reboot Windows
- download the installation exe of the newer version and install it
I looked at the addition and I have done that too, when I moved the database.
I have doen this, it’s up and running again, let’s see what happens with the next update.
Thanks.

Did that 6 days ago, today I saw a new update, same issue.
Are you running your server as a Windows system service?
Yes on Windows, not as a service.
It starts automatically when I log on, as set by the application itself.
@OttoKerner i switched my library location and have been having update issues for months, but following the directions in the post you referenced, fixed it for me. ([HowTo] An extended guide on how to move the Plex data folder on Windows) So thank you!!
Still not working for me.
Where can I get support for this?
Edit:
I just saw that the “Plex Update Service” service wasn’t running.
I started it and the update went smoothly.
Strange.
Are you perhaps storing the plex data folder on an encrypted drive (DriveLocker)?
Set the ‘Plex Updater Service’ to start ‘delayed’.
