I am currently using Plex Media Server Version 1.24.2.4973-2b 1b51db9. Every time I go to the plex app on my Chrome browser it tells me I have an update. But every time I try to install it it just continuously cycles and doesn’t update as it will tell me later there is a server update again. I have even downloaded & tried to install from your home page Server Version Plex-1.35.1.2632-c6783c78-x86_64 but apparently it is not working either. What do I do I have a lifetime Plex Pass
if you are having an issue with the auto updater you can just get the newest version from our downloads page and install it like normal.
I tried that and it didn’t seem to work but will try again
Downloaded the update from your site & tried installing the server update. Once it “supposedly” finished installing I tried to launch it and it loaded another tab on my chrome browser that was just like the last time I tried installing the downloaded update and had nothing but a black blank page. Also on a separate tab on chrome of plex that I had running prior to the update install I refreshed still shows the Server Update Available" still
what URL is it going to?
I had a similar issue in the past because I changed the location of the install location to C:\ instead of %localappdata%. I could download the package updates automatically but they would hang on install . . . probably because the installer was looking for files in %localappdata%.
Any chance you have your installation folder in a non-default location?
what are you talking about, where I d/led the update to or where I installed to . I d/l it to an external h/d. When I install it I install it to the same folder I have used since first installing it years ago at C:/Program Files(x86)/Plex
I d/l it to an external h/d. When I install it I install it to the same folder I have used since first installing it years ago at C:/Program Files(x86)/Plex
So the fun stuff - library, metadata, etc., etc. . . . plus the downloaded updates - resides by default at “%localappdata%\Plex Media Server” which is usually the same as C:\Users\[Your Username Here]\AppData\Local\PlexMedia Server".
If the updates are going to the default location you should find an Updates folder inside that tree with all of the updates that have been downloaded. If it’s not there them you’ve somehow got your library installed at a different location.
NOTE: Just realized that I fell victim to the old style autoformatting issue. I’ve corrected the folder names to display the proper paths. Sorry.
my library of media is on a dedicated external h/d which I have never had a problem with even as I speak. As for the program files they are installed on at C:/Windows/Program Files(x86)/Plex/Plex Media Server
Sorry. I used the wrong terminology in that last post. I said “library” when I should have said “database”. My bad.
So your database directory should be at “%localappdata%\Plex Media Server” (which should be the same as “C:\Users\[Your Username Here]\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server”). Update files should be in a subdirectory called Update
Are those directories present and accessible? If not then you may need a backup/reinstall to get the directories back to their default locations in order for auto-updates to work.
Why is this all of a sudden an issue as I have been putting my updates in the same place on an external hard drive since I joined 6 or 7 years ago. I appreciate your input dlrohwer but I find your answer confusing as I said been putting update files in the same place for years off of my C drive & had no problems at all. And why if this is the problem did BigWheel a Plex Employee not bring that u as a potential reason for my issue? I’ll msg him to have him review your answer. Thanks
This is the Plex Player app. Not the server.
Try to manually download and install the server.
BigWheel can you pls review the conversation dlrohwer & I are having. He is saying I have to
Hi OttoKerner I have tried 5 times to install from a manually downloaded file from your site. Still have the issue
Which file did you download? Please quote the full file name.
Plex-1.35.1.2632-c6783c78-x86_64.exe
As I said: you downloaded the player, not the server.
If you install this file, you will not update the server.
The correct file will have PlexMediaServer in its file name.
ok will try to do again
thanks so much OttoKerner not sure how I grabbed the wrong file before as been doing updates for years must be getting old. But anyway you helped fix the problem. Much appreciated
