Upgrade Motherboard -quetions

I’m looking to upgrade my motherboard. I’m using a micro atx board with Intel i5 4460 @3.2ghz i5 with 4gb ram. I have a ssd drive that I have windows and Plex media server installed and a couple other programs on it. My local data is on another drive, and my content is on other drives and it works good…

I want to upgrade to a full size motherboard, I need more expansion slots, add bluetooth and more ram. I’m using a huge cooler that fills half the board and won’t allow room for more ram. I’m using a Coolmaster game cube case that has plenty of room. I plan to also go to an i7. Looking into doing an upgrade like this it appears I will have to reinstall Windows.

What problems might I run into with Plex since it’s on the same drive as Windows?

Or should I just get a new motherboard, keep my chip and add more Ram, this way I should be able to keep my Windows installation?

Looking for painless suggestions.

Thanks

Windows 10 is pretty good at “adapting” for lack of a better word to new hardware. I have taken an OS hard drive out from one PC and stuck it in another and had it boot just fine on several occasions. Of course you need to have the license key, as it will trip Windows and want to be activated again. Be careful if it’s a digital upgrade license as you will need the original Windows 7 key or whatever you upgraded from. If it’s an oem license integrated into the motherboard, sorry can’t take that license with you as far as I know.

Plex does make backup copies of your database weekly, so it shouldn’t be too bad to restore.

ok thanks, it was a windows 10 install. Ill have to find the disk for the key.
