Qnap NAS myPlex could not connect to your server

I have successfully connected to my samsung TV with the PC server but it will not recognise the QNAP NAS TS-421

According to my Fritz!Box router the ports are already forwarded.

I set the NAS to DMZ still no success.

It shows up in my devices list.

I have uninstalled plex from the NAS it rebooted then reinstalled it.

Debug is on but I don't know where to find it in putty.

I have no Idea what to do now.

I tried to add a channel just now in Plex but it says no channels are available.

A bit confusing. Where is PMS - on the PC or NAS?

Or are you saying you have 2 PMS's : one on the PC which works ok with the Samsung TV Plex App but the PMS on the NAS does not

Correct .. the Qnap Plex server is not showing up on my TV via the NAS but does Via the PC

I have been looking at this Qnap forum for help ..

The Qnap Plex sofware for the NAS is downloaded via the NAS and is says it is up to date.

Thanks for the clarification,

You mention myPlex and port forwarding - this is only necessary for remote access to published PMS servers. For local LAN, access is direct to the local IP Address of the PMS device.

If you are accessing remotely, Orca did mentioned that the Samsung app only supports port 32400 - are you using port 32400 for external access routing to internal port 32400 on the QNAP NAS.

The port forwarding was needed on my router to get the PC server to come up on the samsung I could not add the TED channel if it was not forwarded..

So I thought it might be the router blocking the NAS so I put the QNAP NAS into the DMZ but it made no difference.

Again I will say if you are on one local area network then you do not need any port forwarding and for security reasons the last thing you would want is have a DMZ

I would advise to get this working first as local access and only bring in port forwarding when you need to publish your PMS for external access from remote locations.

Is it just one local network with one router/DHCP server or is your network setup complex?

If one local network and router for example has IP address 192.168.0.1 then all your devices connected on the local area network will have IP Addresses of the form 192.168.0.xxx and you fix the IP addresses for the NAS and PMS PC in the LAN DHCP Reservations - that is because the Samsung TV needs the IP Address of each PMS and if DHCP renewal changes it then the Samsung will fail to connect.

So check the IP Address of the router, IP Address of the Samsung, IP Address of the PMS PC, IP Address of the QNAP. Check that they are fixed (I do it by getting the current IP Address and MAC address then go to the router and reserve the currently allocated IP Address to the corresponding MAC Address)

No port forwarding needed at this stage

And now go to the samsung TV (presumably it is 1.006?) and Preferences and Add the local IP Addresses of each of the PMS's

[...] Orca did mentioned that the Samsung app only supports port 32400 [...]

If you have 2 PMS behind the same IP, you're going to have port conflicts. If the Samsung client will only talk on one port, then whatever server is not on that port is not going to work.

Consider this:

PC's PMS reaches out to myPlex and signs in, it grabs the default port.

NAS's PMS reaches out to myPlex & finds that the default ports are in use locally and cannot be reused so it goes to the first backup port.

Samsung Client reaches out to myPlex and asks for a server list.

-when the client parses the response it throws out any server not on the default port

+NAS is dropped because it's on backup port not defaults.

Thus you have a problem :\

Even though the 2 Servers are local, the NAS is not on default port internally!!!  So the Samsung client cannot find the PMS on the NAS. Even if you go in and tell the Samsung client where Plex is on the NAS, it won't work, wrong port. Why would it be listing on the default ports? it already has one open for the external stuff and it is going to use that for everyone.now that i go and look at it, I may not be correct and This might be the solution?

---------------

Solutions:

1) Don't use NAS for a PMS, it's a bad idea and half guts the magic from what Plex can do.

2) If you have the ability to, put one of the devices into Passthrough list. Not all Router support this and not all ISP's will let you have more than 1 IP. But if your ISP gives you more than one, you can assign one of the devices that 2nd IP ( probably the computer)   This is a bad Idea!

3) Don't publish one of the PMS, granted you lose all remote access features :|

If you have 2 PMS behind the same IP, you're going to have port conflicts. If the Samsung client will only talk on one port, then whatever server is not on that port is not going to work.

Surely this is only an issue if you go through myPlex on the Samsung instead of the local IP Addresses but of course NAS would have to be on 32400 internally

I have only one router.

The iphone connects fine to the PC plex server.

The Tv connects fine to the PC plex server

I turned off the PC plex when I tried to connect to the NAS Plex server.

The DMZ was turned on only briefly to check that is was not blocking any ports.

I set static IP's for all devices on the network including the samsung tv.

Does anyone know how to get the logs I need via putty for the plex server on the NAS ? this might help ?

What's the IP Address of your Samsung TV and of your Qnap ?

/T

The Qnap is 192.168.178.22 (according to qnap finder)
and the TV is 192.168.178.3

Port trunking was enabled in the nas but both go into the same router set as round robin.

Once I had a look at all the devices I saw another NAS on the router with the same name !! Clue.

This was giving me another address completely different than the one the qnap finder gave me. One ending with .100
I deleted port trunking. as it was not really doing much anyway as I only have one ADSL connection.

Now the router is just setting is to 192.168.178.22 the other completely different address which showed up as a disconnected device in the fritz!box router is gone as I deleted port trunking completely.
BTW It could not be set to static. No changes could be made at all for that address.

I disconnected the lan 2 cable from the router then Qnap finder could not find it.

Plugged in Lan 1 only to the Qnap

Completely shutdown the Qnap and unplugged the power / same with the fritz but before I did that I set the fritz to give the Qnap a dynamic IP before I shut it down.

Went to bed...
Next day

Guess what .. now Qnap finder can't find the NAS.

Qnap advised I press the reset button, which only resets network settings and the admin password back to default.

Got a new port  192.168.178.25 which I have set to static.

Ran Plex in the Qnap again. Chrome reported it could not find the page.

Uninstalled and reinstalled Plex again without a reboot on the NAS.

Plex is now found in the NAS and is letting me set it up. I did not press the skip button.

Managed to install the TED channel but got this message next on the PC

BUT

Signed in as xxxxxxxxxxxxxx · Sign Out

There was a problem connecting your server · Retry

Tried manual on port 32400 same problem

Tried Require authentication.... just sits there saying publishing server.

Under plex network is says this.
 192.168.178.25

I can see TED on The PC now. Via the Plex nas server.

it's the Qnap client just refusing to publish my server for some reason.

Turned off port forwarding in the router which was set from port 80 through 82 to port 32400 to 32402 (I have no choice in the end port for some reason.)

Samsung TV is 192.168.178.3 everything is on the same subnet.

Could not install any local media on the NAS. When I press Add Section it just comes up with the gear symbol for a second .. no matter how big the folder
Using /share/MD0_DATA ... is this where I should be going ?

I am running the latest firmware on the TS-412 version. 4.0.2 (20130726)

A lot of information - you are trying some things that are not supported. For example local network authentication is not supported by the Samsung Plex App.

First I am still unclear if you have an intention of publishing one or both of the twp PMS servers you have. Do you need external access outside your local area network ?

Second, the QNAP NAS TS-421 Port Trunking is a specialised topic and probably best addressed in the QNAP forum. It appears to allow the NAS to communicate through two IP channels - does this mean it would end up with 2 local IP Addresses. Anyway, if you wish to benefit from the higher network speed by splitting the load through the two channels then you need to raise that on the QNAP forum or search if it has been raised before.

If you need to publish the PMS's for external access through myPlex then you will have the issue described in OrionShock's post above.

If you do not need to have external access to any of the PMS's and you do not need to look into the Port Trunking feature of the QNAP and have it disabled then that ought to be simple to resolve as you would not be using myPlex and you would not have any port forwarding and you would use one ethernet interface only on the QNAP and have one IP Address locally for it and the PMS on the QNAP would be accessible through this one local IP address which you fix in the router for the MAC address as a reservation then that IP address will not be allocated by the router to any other machine and you could on the QNAP either use DHCP from the router or static. It does not matter. You also reserve the IP Address for the other PMS in the router and you can add both PMS's to the Samsung and have one as the Default PMS which can be changed later. Do not enter any myPlex login details on the Samsung

If you need to publish the PMS;s then that will not be possible because they both have the same external IP Address. You will only be able to publish one of them.

I have managed to get plex to connect from my Qnap to the TV.

BUT ... can't add any folders only channels.
