Upgraded to macOS 26, now liveTV isn't working

Upgraded to macOS 26 today, can’t say for sure that was the cause of the problem but I went to watch liveTV and it just crashes in my appletv and also on the web browser as well on my MacBook. Movies and other shows play fine. LiveTV crashes. The tuner is a hdhomerun and its working fine, it works in the hdhomerun app, it shows up as available in the plex app, but when I try to go to a station, no matter which one, it crashes (on appletv no error is displayed, on browser it says playback error live tv session has ended). Wondering what I can do to fix this, I have the newest version of the server software, I tried reinstalling it, I tried the beta, I tried rebooting the computer, I tried rebooting the tuner, none of that worked.

I have a Mac Mini Pro M4 and it was not working for me after MacOS 26 update.

This is what I had to do.

Click on Channel enabled in Live Tv settings on Server. Rescan

I had deleted the tuner and readded which likely did the same thing but in case it didn’t I just tried the rescan and it still isn’t working

A restart was done after rescan?

didn’t restart the computer. Did restart the plex server. Also tried downgrading the plex server. Still didn’t work with a downgraded version. Now reinstalling Sequoia and hopefully it will work

Are you saying to go to “LiveTV and DVR” in settings then Refresh Guide? If not, where specifically are you clicking on Channel in Live TV settings?

Here you go.

Same issue for me. Deleted DVR and restarted. Added back, rescanned still not working

Hopefully there is a solution but until there is I formatted my drive and reinstalled Sequoia and now it works fine. You can’t format Tahoe through the sequoia installer though, you need to download sequoia through the App Store, make a bootable usb, go into recovery, format through there and then reboot and install sequoia from the bootable usb

I am having the same issue post upgrade. Followed many of the same steps with no resolution! On iOS App the error is Coremediaerrordomain -12971. On web it is Playback Error This live TV session has ended.

Anyone tried the beta of new server version to see if it helps? I fear making things worse. The DVR from OTA TV is really the only thing keeping me on Plex as a platform

Yes I tried the beta, no it didn’t help. The only thing that I got to work was formatting the computer and downgrading the OS back. Glad I got it done, we love Survivor and only have OTA to watch it on

Update: Apple TV updated to tv0s 26 and my live tv is working again! Not sure if the update did it but seems to have?

unlikely, mine was already at tvOS 26 and it doesn’t work in the browser on my computers which should be OS agnostic.

I am seeing the same issues. A live stream will flash for about half a second or less and then it dies. Upgraded to macOS 26 after checking their documentation and did not see anything where there were any incompatibilities with the latest version of the macOS. I do not want to have to downgrade my Mac but this is beyond frustrating. :frowning:

This definitely seems endemic of a broader issue of developers not doing the proper testing with macOS betas.

Thanks… didn’t work unfortunately.

I’ve run into the same issue. The problem seems to be with my HDHomerun channel lineup. When I add my custom m3u channel lineup with Tunarr, those channels stay active and mapped. Plex really needs to get this fixed.

This appears to be related to transcoding. Many clients will require the MPEG2 stream provided by most broadcasts to be transcoded.

While not ideal, disabling hardware-accelerated video encoding allows live TV to work under macOS 26 in my environment (MacBook Air M2).

Settings -> [Select Server] -> Transcoder -> User hardware-accelerated video encoding

Disabling it will force encoding to be done in software.

Can confirm this has resolved the issue, so far. My channel lineup has stayed mapped since disabling hardware encoding.

This surprisingly worked… I wonder what Apple changed in the new OS to prevent hw acceleration from working. Thank you for the info - I’ve pulled out what little hair I have left trying to figure it out.
