Upgraded to PLexPass: Managed User acct says: Looking For Servers

Above must be a common problem.

I started with a regular download account yesterday, and today I subscribed to Plex Pass, so I could set up extra accounts for security. Was able to create a Managed User and gave access to Channels.

The idea is to be able to remotely access ONLY the channels, e.g. IPTV plugin streaming, and not mess with account/server settings, via http://PlexServerIP:3200/web. That is, someone can play with a Managed Account locally or away from home, but only the Admin account user ought to be able to configure/change.

The Admin account works fine both on Server and with remote Chrome browser access. The Managed User account says, Looking For Servers. Tried rebooting, then downloading from newly created Managed Server account asking for a Plex Media Server download. Download fails, log says newer version already installed.

Then go directly to Plex.tv and download/install the Plex Pass Windows Media Server version. Install goes fine, Admin account works, but Managed Account still says, Looking For Servers…

Please help !

It’s only the admin user that should download and install PMS. There’s no need for any guests to have PMS (if they don’t want to share their media too, that is). What the guest need is a client for Windows, or whatever device they prefer. If the guest is on the same network as the server, remember to require authentication on LAN or perhaps create a Plex Home instead.

The channels are tied to a server, so you need to provide access to at least 1 item on your server.

Thanks Peter_W and MovieFan.Plex,

So,

  1. Do I need to download PMS once again? Thought I downloaded from my Admin account anyway. since at the time there was no Managed User account.
  2. Re: Channels tied to Server. How do I provide that access?
  3. Shouldn’t PMS have taken care of it?

Again,

My impression was that once you have set up PMS with Admin and Managed User accounts, you could login remotely via htpp://PlMS-IP:32400/web using just your Managed User account PIN away from home.

But I need the Plex account sign-in too.

What am I doing wrong? Basically I just want the Managed User account to be able to login remotely via browser; then be able to watch Channels.

Currently when I switch to Managed User account on PMS, I get a rotating circle saying, Looking For Servers, and a message, " No one in your home has shared a Library with you." The Learn More button doesn’t say anything on my Server access problem.

I do not have any local content set up yet. I want to test the IPTV channel streaming first, which works under Admin.

Everything seems fine and working under Admin account, with Plex Pass.

Step-by-step instructions, starting from PMS download (if needed) would be helpful.

When you say that you change to a managed user - does that imply that you’ve setup a Plex Home? Or have you created a free Plex account tied to a dummy-mail account? Have you shared your server with this user?

See here from from Ask Ninja:

I was trying to set up a Managed User with my PlexPass sub. But it doesn’t sync, despite fresh install!

Paying for PlexPass only because I want to set up a non-admin rights User that can then access my IPTV streaming from a browser away from home. So no settings are changed on PMS.

Btw, I was able to do exactly this on http://emby.media Emby Server for free: create a non-admin User with password without need for original email sign in ( no email sign in required unless you use EmbyConnect, equivalent to PlexPass.) They have a LiveTV option with TV Guide where you can input m3u playlists to stream under Tuner menu.

So yes, how do you share a Plex Managed User with the PlexPass Server?

I understand your frustration regarding this and am trying to help you as best as I can. I think I’ve understood the issue and found out why it isn’t working. For a fast user switch to work, as with a PIN-code in the Plex Home environment that you’ve setup, you first need to logon with your full account. As in accordance to the help article

https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/203948776-Managed-Users

Note: In order to actually use a Managed User, you need to first sign into the Plex app as a regular/full member of the Home. Once you do so, you can then switch to the Managed User in supported apps.

Would that explain why it isn’t working for you or am I still misunderstanding you? Please let me know and I’ll give it another try.

Peter_W,

Thanks for the kindness  It’s PlexPass " paid support" (Ninjas?) that disappoints me !

Well I went to Win system Tray> Open PlexPass, to see only a dim Admin icon ( the Manager User and Guest Accounts disappeared.) Clicked this icon ti enter PIN, and under Settings the Remote Access is red, with no sign in ( asking for sign in), and the message says, " Version 0.9.16.0 Something went wrong. Please install manually."

Tried typing in my login to see in red, There was a problem signing into Plex.

Up on clicking the manual install warning, it takes me to plex.tv/ downloads which is apparently down for now. Have tried restarting several times and still same situation.

So I am almost certain there has been a Plex fault all along, and they didn’t inform us.

Will report later if there is any progress. Frankly I got much better support from Open Source Emby, and their Live TV iptv streaming works a charm in my remote browser. Shame on paid Plex service ;(

@siliconhippy What I wasaid trying to say is that a managed user is just like any other shared user. You need to specify what they have access to. In order to see channels, they also need to seev your server. So you must share with them at least 1 library, so that they now have access to your server. That library can be blank if you don’t want them to actually have access, but you must share something from your server.

FYI, the ninjas are not paid. They are volunteers just like any other forum member.

Also, there was an issue with plex.tv today that impacted being able to sign in to apps or to sign your server to plex.tv. This only occurred today so it is not the root of your issue.

MovieFan.Plex and Peter_W,

  1. Appreciate your help !

**Was able to sign-in, go to Settings > Users> Share Library. Looking for Servers problem under User solved !
**
But still, why should Plex require an owner email sign-in with Managed User or Guest access via remote browser, http://PlexServerIP:32400/web?

Doesn’t this defeat the very purpose of non-admin User account access, i.e. just letting someone stream to remote browser/device without allowing any settings change?
(We got this simple User access feature in Emby for free, without any owner email login, which is how it should be.)

Is there any way to set up a non-admin Managed User/ Guest type account where only streaming to remote browser/device is allowed without any settings changes, and which does not require owner sign-in, just a PIN for User?

  1. On another note, an older question: does PlexPass provide live transcoding? The Cigaras IPTV channel dev says otherwise, which is really confusing.

Why does it show #1 both times with indentation when it shows #1 and #2 without indentation on the original text, and same with editable text ???

  1. No, there is no way to allow a totally open access when you use Plex Home. That is sort of the point of having Plex Home, it provide extra security. Currently, all access is tied to a particular user and that user needs some method to authenticate. I understand what you are wanting and I believe there have been requests for such a feature.

  2. I’m not clear on this question. Transcoding by definition is live and has nothing to do with PlexPass. If you are referring to transcoding of live streams, then no, PMS does not support that.

  3. The forum has some oddities. I just number these myself instead of relying on the autonumber that the forum can do.

MovieFan.Plex,

I don’t understand the extra security part with non-admin access, but nevertheless. It is more Plex making money

PlexPass was an auto-complete typo instead of PMS.

Question:
So any good reason why PMS no longer supports live transcoding?
Is any channel/ other method available for live transcoding ?( Again Emby fully supports live transcoding.)

In generic terms without going into too much detail, think of Plex as having 3 security modes. 1 - None. Any client can access your PMS without any type of authentication. 2 - regular security, this is where you need to enter the admin account info to access your server or use the link code for certain clients. You can make an exception for devices on the local network to not require this but it automatically uses the admin account. 3 - high security. This is Plex Home. Because there are now multiple users, it’s almost like a 2 factor authentication. You first need to authorize the client, then you need to authorize the user. You can skip the second part by setting the clients to automatically sign in, but you cannot bypass that first part. So there is no way to allow open access to another user, even the guest account.

For the record, PMS has never officially support live streams. There are some live streams that just worked. There is a section in the forum for channel developers to ask questions. I would suggest asking the developer of the channel you are using to provide details there.
