Server Version#: 1.18.4.2171
Plex Web Version#: 4.22.1
I have Windows Server with one admin account and several Managed Users (MU). All MU’s access my server remotely. Everything works great (add the PLEX app, activate, access to the libraries I’m sharing, etc). My concern is that each account (Amazon Fire Stick, Roku, Samsung app. etc) sees my movies, music, TV Shows and “MORE +”. When they select MORE +, they switch to my account and see what I would see if I signed in.
Is this a bug or a setting I need to change?
Any help you provide to prevent MU accounts from accessing my account will be greatly appreciated.
So are you going to their house to sign them in? How are they signing in? Why are you using managed accounts instead of letting them have their own normal accounts?
I’ve been working with them remotely to ensure all is good (I have them on the phone and they send me pictures of what they see if I don’t understand).
When I create an account the only options I see are “Invite Home User”, “Create Managed User”, or “Enable Guest”. If there are other options, is that with the base Windows Server App or with an added plugin?
When you click on the user account, it takes you to the next page with the options of Profile, Shared Library and Restrictions. The libraries I have shared are good. The Remote Managed Users see these libraries fine.
However, from their Home Page, they also have an option to select MORE+. When they do, they see my the admin home page which is me. I don’t want Remote Users to have this option. They should only see their home page with Movies, Music, Plex TV, etc.
Since you are not at their house how are they signing in? After they sign in, are they actually switching to their account?
The second part of my question is why are you making them managed user accounts in the first place instead letting them make their own accounts which they can have their own password for. Plex accounts are free.
What is happening is your managed users are like sub profiles of your main account. Like how netflix etc has multiple user profiles for the same login.
This means that you must log in your remote users yourself, or give them your admin credentials.
Since someone is logging in with your admin credentials, plex assumes that it is the admin user (that is why there is no prompt for a pin or for sub profiles/managed users).
What bigwheel is advising, is instead of putting your users on managed users (they use your account), have them create their own plex account, then you can add their plex account to your HOME.
admin account (this is you if it is your server)
– managed home users (sub profiles under your account, using your credentials)
unmanaged home users (separate plex accounts that are invited to your plex home)
shared users (separate plex accounts that you have shared to).
This option to Share with Friends looks like they need to have a PLEX account. Is this correct? If so, does the account they open need to be a paid account or free?
This is not how I have it set-up but it provides what I’m looking for, I get make the changes.
I assume I remove the shares I have form the Managed User and need it from the Friends select you mentioned.
Let me test this with one user but would like you’re feedback to the above to ensure I understand what I need to do. I’ll get them to open free accounts on Plex.
Plex accounts are free
Plex Media Server is free
Remote access is free
Sharing with other users is free
All of our apps for Televisions or tv connected devices like Rokus are free.
Plex Home is designed for people you actually live with in your home.
Unfortunately this a common situation to be in (adding users as managed home users, instead of having them create free accounts).
all plex accounts are free.
plex pass unlocks MOBILE apps (tv and other apps are free), otherwise someone can unlock their mobile for 1 time fee
inviting someone to your home, essentially shares your plex pass features.
also, everyone that is in the home, will show up on the user profile screen.
inviting a regular shared user, means they either use the free apps, pay to unlock the mobile apps, or have their own plex pass.
shared users do not show up on the user profile screen.
home is intended for family.
managed home users are usually for people that live in the same physical house (they share the same devices)
unmanaged home users are people outside of your house, that use their own devices (you should not let people use your account on devices that you do not control).
finally, the worst problem is that there is no way to go from managed user > to unmanaged user.
in the example setup linked above, when lisa and bart grow up and want their own account, they can’t take their play history etc with them to their own account (their profiles are part of homer’s account).
if you want to keep them as home managed users have them go to the account menu with the user avatar that ( i am guessing they see your avatar) select it then choose “switch user”. from the user picker they need to pick themselves so they are not signed into your account
I just read thru the example link you provided. Fully understand the difference of the “Friends” and “Home Users” now. The one concern I have is that all of my accounts have PINS so if a Managed User switches to my account via the MORE+, should it prompt the user?
I think the answer is what you said, the Managed User is an extension of the admin account but want to be sure.
In the Simpsons setup example (from the link), it stated the Lisa and Bart accounts would be prompted for Homer’s pin if they tried to switch. In this case I’m homer and the Managed Account I used was not prompted for my pin.
they can’t switch to an account via “more” There is no option for that there. Switching accounts is via the user menu which is the username on the top left of home screen. that opens an options to see settings or Switch users (and possibly other options depending on app)
everything you have said so far sounds like they are still signed in as you, and not actually switching the managed user accounts that you made them.
