UPnP and Netgear Nighthawk R6700: Port 0

Server Version#: 1.19.4.2935
Player Version#: 1.12.1.1253-c29aa096
Hi everyone,

I was using my provider router before without any problem and changed to a Nighthawk R6700 a month ago.

At the same time I upgraded Plex MS and remote access didn’t work automatically using UPnP.
I can see on the router that the port is properly opened but in the remote access settings of Plex it turns green and then after less than a second port changes to 0 and it doesn’t work anymore.

I’ve found a fix which is forcing the port in Plex and use the one that is displayed on my router interface.
But I’m experiencing power outages (from my provider) and every time my router restarts (my NAS which is hosting Plex doesn’t reboot as it’s just a super short cut) I have to set Plex with automatic port, then check my router to find the port and finally force the port.
It’s a bit boring and I would expect it to work perfectly as it was before.

Again I can’t tell if the problem comes from Plex or my router as I found posts at exactly the same time explaining that people lost Remote Access.

In my router I can set the number of hops in UPnP. It was set to 4 and I’ve changed to 12 but it doesn’t change anything.
Should I increase this setting?

Here are some logs when it doesn’t work:

It’s funny cause when it works (port forced) I can’t find the port number in the logs…

It would be great if someone could help

Thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot for your feedback but I want to keep UPnP enabled.
I’ve tried doing a manual port forward but with UPnP it doesn’t seem to work.
When I say I force the port in Plex I mean I specify the port manually and it works perfectly. I just wanted to let Plex choose it so that if there is a reboot of the router I don’t have to do anything.

This is an UPNP client that will allow you to test the UPNP service of your router. If you have trouble with that too, then the problem is on your router.

Thanks CostaHT !
But it requires Java and I don’t want to install this on my computer

trumpy81: I’ve done a port forwarding a few minutes ago and disabled UPnP. It works fine.
I’ve reenabled UPnP and it seems to still work fine.

I will try a reboot of my router.

Anyway I would love to have everything automatically working without having to specify a port manually and creating a port forwarding locally.

That’s what I did on another port.
But this means that I have to specify a port and do a manual port forwarding which might be in conflict with UPnP still enabled.
I didn’t have time to do a reboot before leaving home but if everything works like this after a reboot then I’m fine.
I just don’t understand why it was working fine with everything automatically setup and not anymore.

Thanks for your help

I’ve rebooted my router several times and it didn’t change anything.
I don’t see the relation with my ISP.

I just don’t understand why when I put uPnP and automatic port on Plex the port is properly mapped on my router and port changes to 0 in Plex.

Anyway if it works with uPnP enabled and manual port forwarding I’m happy (but I’ve read that some people had issues with this setup).
I will try to reboot my router when I’m home to check if things work well.

I appreciate your help but you’re stating things without knowing anything about me.
I clearly understand how networks work as I have a engineering degree in Network and Security (15 years ago though and I’ve never worked directly in networks) and I’m a CIO. I’m not an expert but I think I have some good knowledge.

In my opinion port forwarding and UPnP should work without a problem but I’ve read that in some cases with a Netgear router they could be in conflict.

To me it seems you’re not trying to understand my problem. You’re providing a workaround that works but it’s not the real solution.

Why doesn’t it work automatically? Why do I have to specify a port manually although I see the port opened in my UPnP table?
Why does it change to 0 in Plex?

I read logs and the difference is not obvious when it works and when it doesn’t.

What I can also see is that Synology Quickconnect is using UPnP and it works perfectly. That’s why I was suspecting Plex.

I also think there’s something wrong with upnp in the last several releases. It works immediately after enabled, but then Plex seems to ask for the router to open multiple ports but doesn’t use them.

It will work again briefly after being enabled. Wash, rinse, repeat. So it’s not just you, CIO. And getting help on this forum can be tough. If you find someone who is responsive, I’ve found the best way to get help is to @ who you’ve found will help you.

I’ve put a manual port forwarding and it works.
But there is clearly an UPnP issue and I think you’ve pointed it too.
Maybe I’ll try in the future to see if this is solved in a new release but at the moment I keep my configuration.

I was having similar problem with Verizon, because they have a housekeeping routine for port forwarding configurations that are not being used. Unfortunately, disabling it did not work, so I’m using static nat.
