Use Plex on a PS3 at your own risk!!!

So whether or not it is the culprit (which I cannot say for certain) I am blaming Plex for the reason why I have lost everything on my PS3.

In the last 2-3 months it has not played a single game, downloaded a single update, or done anything other than run the Plex app.
So the other night my partner is watching some Simpsons to fall asleep to. As usually I go in to turn it all off once she is asleep and I noticed that the audio was all choppy. So I stopped the episode and it just hung on a still screen with the 3 dots in the center.
I waited a minute or 2 and no change, so I quit the app (holding down the PS button and selecting “Quit”). That subsequently crashed the PS3, and with 3 beeps from the PS it turned off.

I turned it back on and instead of being greeted by the menu it tells me that my database is now corrupted and needs to be rebuilt.
So I run the rebuild and it stops around 40%, the HDD light goes off and then about 7 hours later it finally finishes, resets and proceeds to tell me the same message and starts the process (with same results) all over again. And over, and over…

So after 3 times I proceeded to take the HDD out and plug it into my PC to run diagnostics.
All the physical test came back positive. No physical issue on the drive at all. So I started diagnostics on the data of the drive. When I looked at the sectors on it there are entire blocks of contiguous sectors that have had the data corrupted on it. This has made the data on it completely unrecoverable, and since I did not have a back-up or (at the time) an PS+ cloud service, I have lost years and years of gaming work.

Now I have never had a single issue with this PS3. No previous corruption and I cant even recall ever having the system crash.
And like I said… the only thing this PS3 has been doing the past few months is running the Plex app.
Couple that together with the fact that I tried to bring up an issue with the PS3 app that clearly went unnoticed (well it had 1 view) and unreplied, I feel I have a pretty solid case to mark Plex as the culprit here

Please don’t get me wrong… I am not trying to say that Plex is crap and to warn people off (although I am pretty disappointed that my issue has gone without any recognition from you guys). On the contrary… I still use it on my PS4 and on my PC and Android phone.
What I am saying is that in its current state I believe that using the PS3 Plex app is a risk and that if you should choose to do so, then make a backup in-case you should suffer the same fate (a warning I wish I had gotten).

When you streaming movies and tv-shows it needs to save that data for a short time, which uses the HDD. Therefore it´s just natural that an old HDD will sooner or later die. It’s not that expensive to buy a new one! Or even upgrade to PS4

Thank-you for the absolutely useless post joeldeluxe94. Do you have any completely obvious and extremely basic information you would like to share?
Especially any information that shows that you barely read my post? I am of course referring to the fact that not only did I clearly state that this unit has had absolutely no issues previously, but also that I actually said I already have a PS4 that I use Plex on.
I have been doing this a long time mate and know my way around my electronic devices. More then most…

This post was not about a HDD dying. It was about the data lost due to the corruption brought on by using the Plex app on my PS3. And if you knew anything about Play Stations, you would know that the data is irretrievable and lost to me due to the way they encrypt the data used by their machines.

Now unless you have something to add that has any actual real value to the issue, then I suggest you just walk on by and keep on walking please.

P.s. The reason you are getting your head chewed off here is because a) I have a newborn and am running off bugger all sleep these days. And b) I do not suffer fools and idiots lightly. And to be completely honest I found your post to be completely unnecessary and stupid.
