I just learned that I could turn on the ability for Plex to download the appropriate subtitles for my movie collection. I have done this successfully. The subtitles are now available for each particular movie.
But the ones I’ve tested are out of sync with the dialog. Is there a way to fix this? I’ve only tested using Plex web on my desktop. I also have a Roku that I assume will have the same issue.

So it looks like I just need a way to move them forward or backward a few seconds. Is there a way to manually sync them?
If you pause playback in the web app, you’ll see the ‘faders’ icon.
It provides you with the means to shift the subtitles back or forth in time.
For the Roku, I cannot tell you how to do it.
If all else fails, you may have to fetch the subtitle using WebTools and then edit the file with a subtitle editor to adapt the timing information.
Ok. I tried that. I added 4000ms for the offset and it didn’t change at all (using external SRT subtitles that Plex found). I don’t know why they aren’t moving.
I guess I need to subtract time. That seems backwards to me but it fixed. I haven’t tested it but I suspect that Roku will know when I test it out.
Well, I lined up the subtitles for the first dialog but as the movie goes on they gradually become more and more out sync (many seconds). I’ve had this problem with subs before (when encoding them). I don’t understand why they aren’t spaced the same as the movie and don’t know how that could easily be fixed. Oh, well. TY
This happens when the subs are made for a DVD version, while you have a video from Blu-ray (or vice versa).
DVD generally plays the movies faster than BR, so that the subtitles need a different “speed” as well.
This can be changed as well with a subtitle editor. It’s usually called “frame-rate”.

Ok so I downloaded Subtitle Edit. By 19 min. into the movie the subtitles are 40 seconds too late. The framerate is 25. Do I go to a smaller number or larger to try to get them in sync? The starting dialog is in sync at the beginning of the movie.
Ok, well nothing I did seemed to work out right with the frame rate. I finally did a visual sync early and late in the movie and it did pretty good. A few places are off a bit but it will do. It is way better than no subs or any manual adjusting I tried. Thank you for your help. I will get a lot of use in the future from that program, too!
You’ll always also have to look at the frame rate which is used in the video file, to determine in which direction you’ll have to alter the frame rate of the subtitle.
There is actually no way to store the frame rate in the subtitle file. So the 25 it is showing at the top is just a default value for European users.
So how do you find the framerate for a video? I tried Properties, Details and it shows Framerate there but is blank.
If you don’t see it in Plex, the video hasn’t been analyzed properly (yet?).
