I am currently in the process of setting up a Plex server at the school I work for. This will give teachers & students the ability to stream content internally.
Since we have hundreds of teachers & students creating individual accounts isn’t possible. I also looked into creating a general use account for authenticating but the password on this account could be changed at any point & time.
I then looked into changing the “List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth” setting to allow our internal range, which was working amazingly, but this also allowed users to change server settings.
Any help would be amazing on how I could configure this.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to limit this. I would suggest creating 2 Plex accounts. 1 for the server and 1 as a user. Share the server to the user and then let everyone log in with that user account. They won’t be able to change any server settings this way.
I was actually going to suggest setting up PLEX Home with one admin account that is pin protected and one guest account and let them use the guest account… There is no password and they can’t change server settings… Not sure if that’s a PLEX Pass feature though…
That will work too. I guess it depends on how much control you want. Sharing to another Plex user, the users would/could log into any clients themselves. If you use Plex Home and a managed user (or guest) then the admin would need to log into each client at least once to authenticate the account.
If this is in a school setting, I don’t know if the PIN is enough to protect the admin account. Kids have lots of time to brute force the PIN.
No. If people share an account, anybody can change the password. That’s why it’s not a good idea to share accounts if you don’t need to.
Keep in mind that Plex was designed for residential use, not in a school with 100s of kids. You’ll probably run into some sort of issue no matter what you do. If you need a secure system, you’ll need to look into other solutions.
