For years, I’ve used an Intel NUC running PHT, and then OpenPHT, and lately Plex Media Player for Windows as my primary Plex client app.
It’s plugged into my “dumb” TV with an HDMI. I control it with an old Samsung remote using an original FLIRC. It works so wonderfully because I could map every command to dedicated buttons on the remote — things like subtitle offsets, audio offsets, jumping from Home to Now Playing, etc.
But now, I finally bought a 4k smart TV. A Sony Bravia, running Android TV. I find the user interface of the Android TV Plex app much harder to navigate. I have to drill down deeper to get to my content. And I can’t find ways to do things like subtitle offsets. The idea of a Plex app right on my TV seems great, but I’m just missing so much functionality. Also, Android TV in general is ridiculously buggy.
I would continue to just use my Plex Media Player on my NUC, but it doesn’t support 4k output. I plan on acquiring more 4k content and would like to take advantage of my beautiful new display.
So, I was thinking of disconnecting my TV from the internet, and maybe getting an NVIDA shield instead. But I’m looking at the remote, and it has like 5 buttons. This makes me worry about how difficult navigating the Plex app would be. Will the experience be just as poor as the built-in Android TV Plex app?
Anyone have suggestions for someone like me who prefers using a physical remote with lots of mapped keys?
