Apparently EPGs are now broken and creating new DVRs fails when trying to retrieve the guide. Seeing as the Plex team is being very radio silent here and in the EPG threads I don’t know if or when this will be resolved.
I was successfully able to get schedulesdirect.com to work using EPG123. For my configuration, I need to run that software on a windows machine and have a scheduled task copy (xcopy.exe) the generated XMLTV file to a folder on the Mac where Plex pulls it in daily during the maintenance window.
So far, working great.
Would be even nicer if the built in Gracenotes EPG worked (afterall, that’s part of paying for PlexPass). But, Plex is unable to get this functioning properly, as demonstrated over the past six months at least.
Same here. No EPG. I noticed less than 2 weeks of recordings scheduled last weekend (Feb 24) and didn’t do more digging. Wednesday night (2/27) I noticed nothing was schedule beyond Thur (2/28). Today (Fri 3/1) I deleted all tuners and tried re-adding to a current version of plex (1.15) and my trusty 1.6.1. Now neither version will find my CATV provider.
I’m already an Emby lifetime member with subscriptions to schedulesdirect. A few questions to the Plex Team:
- Why is there not an option to use an external EPG provider?
- I first noticed the event more than a week ago (Feb 24). Why was there not an email to DVR users with instructions how to proceed?
- Why are you not providing updates as our scheduled recordings will no longer record? In other words this is now a service affecting issue!
- Why is there not an option to use an external EPG provider?
There is. I got frustrated with the built in Gracenotes provided EPG. Check out this thread: https://forums.plex.tv/t/xmltv-vs-plex-epg-scrape/238938
I found the zap2it tutorial. Yes, it is a workaround. However, you have to delete the DVR in order to use the new XML format. This means all scheduled recording are deleted. I have to add all my recordings in manually. Not a huge issue other than some will not be available in the guide for months. If there is a way to modify the EPG settings for an existing DVR let me know. As previously noted I am using v1.6 which has been BULLETPROOF and never missed any scheduled show.
Yup same here. EPG is completely broken for me. Redoing the setup does not work. I get to the point of mapping channels with EPG and it just says “Unknown status”. So no TV for me. It’s time to respond and fix this issue Plex staff. Just roll back whatever you managed to do.
Do you still have errors / hang during Refresh of the Guide? if you do, please upload logs from the server after a failed refresh
See

I solved it by pointing to a local xml (using xteve). Using http fetching seemed to fail. That said I really hope you guys are planning a heavy redesign of the EPG and the possibility to group channels/favorite channels. The current implementation works for up to 20-30 channels. Just saying it could be a lot more efficient and ease of use with some small changes.
if there are still errors on EPG refresh I would like to know and see logs so that we can refer the issue to our providers
I have passed your comment on. Thank you
After moving to a local path for the xml I have no issues. When I get the time I will reset it do it again and also save the logs for you if it fails.
