Very few channels HDHomeRun Prime

I have Optimum Silver, which should get me a few hundred channels (excluding on demand/interactive stuff), but I only found 78 channels with the channel scan. Also from a quick glance, none of the channels seem to be premium channels (e.g. I feel like I would get most of these from an OTA antenna). I’m running an HDHomeRun Prime and Plex 1.4.4 on FreeNAS.

P.s. Is there a way to sort Plex Live TV by channel?
P.p.s How come I don’t see a play button (only a record button) when I click on a show that’s “now airing”?

So, first question is can you get all those channels from the HDHR app? If not, then you won’t get them anywhere else.

No, the channel scan only detects 78 channels. But why wouldn’t it get all the channels that I would get with the Cable card if I were to use Tivo or something like that? The cablecard is capable of delivering every channel I pay for.

I agree. My point is you need to work with your cable company and SD to figure that out.

I can’t imagine what help my cable company will be since it’s a third party box that they don’t support. And I’d love to get on the SD forums, but they require an activation email, which I’ve been waiting days for them to send. That’s why I came here in the first place.

Have you activated the cable card with Optimum? Until you activate the card you probably won’t receive all the channels. When you activate the card they will ask you for some information about your Prime and the cable card you have.

Yeah, I had to bind the card to HDHomeRun in order to receive any channels at all. I sent SD a support ticket and hopefully they’ll be able to help. I’ll also double check with optimum that the card is set to receive all the channels I’ve paid for and that they didn’t accidentally mess that up.

As it turns out they messed something up in the activation process, so a channel scan on the HDHomeRun now gives me 400~ channels, however when I go into Plex it says a lot of those channels are “protected”.

Is there any news if Plex plans on adding support for DRM protected content?

Seriously doubt it. CableLabs certification is required to allow recording of DRM protected content. Requires payment to CableLabs and submission of program for their testing/verification. Any future revisions to program must be resubmitted to CableLabs.

How about just live TV ( no recording ) with premium channels. Does that require certification as well ?

Not sure if Live TV requires certification.

Yes it still does.

The only way I can see Plex making this work is if the DRM protected path code can be placed in a modular library that doesn’t have to be updated with the rest of the Plex software. Otherwise, development would slow to a halt. Considering that protected path would have to be supported in the server and any client which will be receiving this content, it would be a very tall order.

As more people cut the cords, and more solutions become available for cord cutters, it is practices like these at CableLabs which will shrink the traditional market even faster.

I don’t think the cable television industry gives a crap about what people want, so I doubt this will ever change.

What you fail to realize is that cablelabs exists because of the content providers. They are the ones demanding what cablelabs provides because they want total control of the content. The cable companies generally do what they want because they want to provide the customer the content they want. So it is either be restrictive like this and piss off a few customers or simply don’t have the content the majority of customers wants.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking this is as simple as the cable company is screwing you out of those channels.

Something else that is a bit concerning to me in regard to plex and the DVR functionality is that the industry is moving away from providing content the current way anyways. Cablecard are on borrowed time already as the TV service industry moves toward applications/on demand streaming services. That is something the FCC already realized years ago. Plex would be well served by focusing on integration of the cable providers web based tv solutions as well. The problem with those solutions is they kind of kill the DVR because once you start streaming you don’t need to have a copy stored locally (unless you like to archive seasons of shows).

As things go to a streaming setup cablelabs will be gone.

Better integration of streaming services into Plex would be nice, but to make it work well we would need to see buyin by the streaming service providers into having their content exposed (even in a secure way) through alternate interfaces. I subscribe to Netflix. Ideally, when I’m in Plex, I’d like to see content available through Netflix along side my local library and television program guide.

If Netflix exposed their streaming content list through an API, and provided some sort of secure, portable viewing client that could be embedded in Plex, this would be ideal. Unfortunately, I don’t see it ever happening. There are still far too many silos of control out there.

This is also where the great integration with STB’s like android TV gets really nice. Android TV can show content from all the software loaded on it. It is doing what you are talking about already.
